FORT WORTH, TX: The 20th ranked Texas Wesleyan University baseball team (10-8, 3-1 SAC) split a Sooner Athletic Conference doubleheader with Southwestern Assemblies of God University (10-12, 1-4 SAC) at LaGrave Field on Thursday. The Lions took game one 3-2, before the Rams prevailed in game two 6-4.
In game one, The Rams loaded the bases with one out in the second inning after drawing three walks. With two down,
Jonathan Bravo launched a two-run double into the gap in left center to stake the Rams to a 2-0 lead.
With one out in the fourth inning, Dej Mathis broke up
Mitch McLeod's hitless streak with an RBI single through the right side. The second Texas Wesleyan error of the inning later let in the tying run. McCleod, who tossed a no-hitter his last time out, had not allowed a hit in 10.2 innings.
In the fifth, Jared Denton pushed across the go-ahead run for the Lions with a groundball. In the bottom of the frame, the Rams put runners at second and third with two outs, but Jeremy Cross got out of the jam with a harmless groundout.
The Lions got a pair of singles in the seventh, but
Jake Davis threw out a pair of would-be base stealers to hold the score at 3-2. The Rams got the tying run to third base in the bottom of the seventh, but Cross was up to the task once again.
Cross (2-1) earned the win after allowing two runs on three hits and striking out three in seven innings. McCleod (3-1) struckout nine while allowing three runs, one earned, on four hits in seven innings of work.
In game two,
Quavian Lawson got the Rams on the board when he blasted a two-run double to left center in the third inning.
In the fourth inning,
Ryan Adams led off with an infield single. Davis bunted Adams to second, and
Joel Rickman made it 3-0 when he lined a hit off of pitcher Pedro Ortiz's leg.
SAGU mounted a comeback in the fifth. The Lions loaded the bases with no one out, and Preston Hornbeck lined a single to center that eluded the TWU centerfielder and cleared the bases. Hornbeck later scored the go-ahead run on a passed ball.
The Rams came right back in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI single from
Jake Howeth and a two-run double from
Jose Martinez to bring the score to 6-4.
Avery Sullivan (2-1) worked the final 2.1 to secure the win for Texas Wesleyan. He allowed no runs on just two hits. Ortiz (1-4) took the loss after allowing six runs, four earned, on six hits in six innings of work.
Lawson went 2-for-3 with a double, two RBI, and a run scored in the game-two win.
The two teams will complete their three-game series with a single nine-inning contest in Waxahachie on Friday. That game is scheduled for a 2:00 p.m. start.
