Bravo Slams Northwood

CEDAR HILL, TX:  The Texas Wesleyan University baseball team (24-22, 12-11 SAC) split a doubleheader at Northwood University (29-18, 16-6 SAC) on Saturday.  The Rams used a seventh inning grand slam from Jonathan Bravo to take game one 10-7 before the Knights prevailed 10-5 in game two.
 
Barring a meeting in the SAC Tournament, the games marked the final meeting between the two programs as Northwood will be closing its Athletic Department at the end of the season.  The Rams and Knights met on the baseball field 65 times with the Knights holding a 38-27 edge all-time.
 
On Saturday, Bravo bookended a wild game one with a pair of blasts.  Bravo touched off a solo shot to lead off the game and later delivered a 10-7 win with a grand slam in the seventh.
 
Friday's series opener featured big innings as the Rams put up an eight spot and Northwood had a pair of five-run frames in a 14-11 Knight victory.  The offensive onslaught continued on Saturday.
 
The Rams were just getting started with Bravo's leadoff bomb.  Texas Wesleyan added four more runs with RBI on a double from Dakota Lee, a single from Adam Turpin, a sac fly from Quavian Lawson, and a single from Joel Rickman.
 
The Knights edged back with unearned tallies in the first and third innings.  Tyler Kamtz pushed the score to 6-2 with a sac fly in the top of the sixth, but Northwood came up with a big inning in the bottom of the sixth.
 
The inning started with a dropped third strike, and the Knights took full advantage of the extra out.  With two outs, Ozzie Gutierrez entered the game as a pinch hitter and capped the rally with an RBI double that gave Northwood a 7-6 lead.
 
In the seventh, Turpin and Ryan Adams singled with one out.  Manny Sanchez later drew a two-out walk to set the table for Bravo who smashed a grand slam to left.
 
Mitch McLeod (5-5) earned the win after allowing seven unearned runs on six hits and five walks while striking out seven in six innings pitched.  Avery Sullivan faced three batters in the bottom of the seventh to secure his fourth save of the season.  Andres Caraveo (4-4) took the loss after allowing five runs on five hits in 2.2 innings.
 
Bravo went 3-for-5 at the plate with a walk, five RBI, and two runs scored.  Turpin also had three hits in four trips to the plate as the Rams outhit the Knights 16-6.
 
In game two, Carlos Contreras gave the Knights a 1-0 lead with an RBI double in the first.  The big inning struck again in the second.  After a Northwood error opened the door, Texas Wesleyan rallied with two outs, stringing together three straight singles from Jake Davis, Bravo, and Kamtz followed by a double from Jake Howeth to take the lead at 5-1.
 
Northwood tied the game with four runs on three hits, a walk, and an error in the third.  Then, in the fourth, the strike zone got away from the Rams.  Northwood turned six walks into four more runs and a 9-5 advantage.
 
A solo homer from Jessue Alvarado in the fifth, capped the scoring at 10-5.
 
Cody Faulkner (5-4) earned the win after allowing five unearned runs on eight hits while striking out eight in 5.1 innings.  Easton Etter (4-3) took the loss after allowing three runs on three walks without recording an out.
 
Howeth went 3-for-4 in game two with a pair of RBI.
 
The Rams will return to action on Tuesday, when they make the short trip to Richardson, TX, to take on UT-Dallas.  That game is scheduled for a 3:00 p.m.
