Rams Sweep Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

FORT WORTH, TX:  The Texas Wesleyan University baseball team (26-23, 15-11 SAC) swept a Sooner Athletic Conference series from Wayland Baptist University (31-20, 17-9 SAC) at LaGrave Field on Friday.  The Rams took game one 5-2 and game two 3-2.

After an extending outing in his last time out, Sam Martin struggled with his control in the first inning of Friday's opening game, but the senior from Denton, TX, worked around three walks and a single to keep the Pioneers off the scoreboard.

In the third inning, the Rams plated a pair of runs with four straight safeties from Jake Davis, Jonathan Bravo, Tyler Kamtz, and Jake Howeth.

The two teams traded runs in the fourth inning.  The Pioneers scored a run on a two-out single from Chris Buitron.  Jose Martinez started the bottom of the inning with a base hit and later scored on a sac fly from Davis.

WBU inched back within a run with an RBI double from Josh Alexander in the fifth.  In the bottom of the frame Bravo led off with a single, stole second and moved to third on an errant throw, giving the Rams a runner at third with no outs.  However, Wayland's Craig Cook got out of the jam with a ground ball, a walk, and a double play.

The Rams got some insurance in the sixth, scoring two runs on two walks and base-hits from Joel Rickman, Davis, and Kamtz.

Martin settled in after that first inning and improved to 8-1 on the season.  He worked all seven innings and allowed two earned runs on ten hits and three walks while striking out three.

In game two, the Rams loaded the bases with one out in the first, but WBU hurler Mason Taylor limited the damage to just an RBI single from Adam Turpin.

An RBI single from Bravo pushed the score to 2-0 in the second.

The score remained the same through five innings.  In the sixth, the Pioneers scored a run on a passed ball and then got an RBI single from Mark Davis to tie the game at 2-2.

After two quick outs in the bottom of the sixth, Quavian Lawson drew a walk.  Ryan Adams flared a single to center, and pinch-runner Anthony Samuel hustled home with the go-ahead run when Rickman singled through the left side.

Mitch McLeod (6-5) earned the win after fanning 10 Pioneers.  He allowed two runs, one earned, on four hits in a complete game seven inning effort.

The two teams will complete their three-game series on Saturday.  That game is scheduled for a 12:00 p.m. start at Sycamore Park.
