Rams Fall To Pioneers, Win Series 2-1

FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University baseball club (26-24, 15-12SAC) took a 10-3 loss against Wayland Baptist University (32-20, 18-9SAC) at Sycamore Park on Saturday afternoon.
 
The Pioneers took advantage of a Josh Vera walk in the first that featured some heads-up base running. Vera swiped second on a delayed steal before taking third on a wild pitch, but was thrown out at the plate by Alex Lopez on a rocket up the middle that hit Lopez. Lopez still had the awareness to flip the ball to Adam Turpin to get the tag out and stop a run.
 
Texas Wesleyan took the lead in the bottom of the second with a trio of hits. Dakota Lee beat out a hit in the hole at second, and then beat the throw home on a Jose Martinez stand up triple in the right center gap. Turpin followed that with a worm burner down the right field line for a RBI and a 2-0 lead.
 
The Pioneers got a run back in the third inning after a walk led to a balk and wild pitch, to put a runner on third with one out. Mark Davis knocked a base hit into right field to drive in a run. Wayland picked up three more runs on three hits to take a 4-2 lead.
 
Wayland Baptist put two on the scoreboard in the fifth in a one hit, two error inning to extend the lead to 6-2.
 
Texas Wesleyan got a run back in the sixth inning after a Jake Howeth single up the middle led to a Martinez RBI groundout to make it 6-3 game.
 
The Pioneers added four more runs before taking a 10-3 game three win. Texas Wesleyan won the series 2-1.  
 
Martinez went 1 for3 with two RBI. Turpin went 1 for 3 with a RBI. Lee went 1 for 2 with a run scored. Howeth went 1 for 3 with a run scored.
 
Today, three outstanding seniors played in their final home game of their careers at Texas Wesleyan. Lee, Sam Martin, and Chris Maffie have accounted for over 100 wins and an appearance in the NAIA National Tournament Opening Round Final.
 
Maffie, a left handed pitcher from Denton, TX, has made scoreless relief appearances this season against Jarvis Christian and Texas Lutheran.
 
Lee, a first baseman from Hectorville, OK has played in 89 games for the Rams and is a career .367 hitter with 23 doubles, a home run and 42 RBI. This season he is hitting .383 in 46 games with 18 doubles and 30 RBI. He is currently on a nine game hitting streak.
 
 Martin, a right handed pitcher from Denton, TX has a 20-2 record in two seasons as a Ram. Last year he went 12-1 with a 2.35 ERA and was an All-Conference selection. This season he is 8-1 with a 2.29 ERA. He ranks third in the SAC in ERA and fourth in wins.
 
The Rams will gear up for the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament with a non-conference game against NCAA Division I opponent the University of Texas at Arlington on Tuesday, April 29. That game scheduled for a 6:30pm first pitch.
