Rams Take One From No. 2 Bison

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
FORT WORTH, TX:  The Texas Wesleyan University baseball team (18-19, 9-8 SAC) split a doubleheader with second ranked Oklahoma Baptist University (31-6, 12-4) at LaGrave Field on Friday.  The Rams took game one 4-3 before the Bison exploded for a 15-1 win in game two.

In game one, OBU's Joey Szczepanski singled and scored the game's first run in the top of the first.  Tyler Kamtz and Jake Howeth singled in the bottom of the first and Kamtz scored the tying run on an OBU error.

Two more OBU miscues allowed Jose Martinez to score the go-ahead run in the second, but the Bison tied the game at 2-2 with an RBI double from Garrett Roberts in the fourth.  OBU had runners at second and third with one out in that inning, but Sam Martin fielded a hot-shot comebacker and then ended the rally with a strikeout.

A Texas Wesleyan error extended the fifth inning for Ivan Vela who delivered an RBI single for the Bison.  In the bottom of the fifth, singles from Jonathan Bravo and Kamtz put runners at the corners with nobody out.  Howeth then delivered his third hit of the day to score Bravo and tie the game at 3-3.  With two outs the throw back to the mound from the Bison catcher got away and Kamtz scampered home to put the Rams back on top.

OBU loaded the bases in the sixth, but Martin was up to the task.  Martin (6-1) went the distance allowing only one earned run on six hits while striking out a pair in the win.  Julian Merryweather (6-2) allowed four runs, one earned, on seven hits in five innings of work.

Howeth was 3-for-3 with three singles.  Kamtz added a pair of hits in three trips to the plate.

In game two, the Bison put four runs on the board in the first inning using two hits, two walks, and a hit-batter in the rally.

The Rams got a run back in the bottom of the first with a sac fly off of Howeth's bat, but things quickly got away as OBU scored three in the second, two in the third, and two more in the fourth to lead 11-1.

The Bison knocked in four more runs in the seventh to cap the scoring at 15-1.

Jordan Morales (8-0) got the win after allowing a run on three hits in five innings of work.  Mitch McLeod (3-5) took the loss after allowing nine runs, five earned, on six hits in three innings.  Four Texas Wesleyan pitchers combined to allow the Bison 11 hits, 12 walks, and three hit-batters.

The two teams will play the series finale on Saturday.  That game is scheduled for a 2:00 p.m. start.
