Rams Finish on a High Note: Top SAGU 25-5

Box Score

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK:  The Texas Wesleyan University (27-26) baseball team wrapped up the 2014 season with a resounding 25-5 win over Southwestern Assemblies of God University (18-33) in the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament on Sunday.

After being shutout in back-to-back games, the Rams came alive for one of the greatest offensive displays in program history.  Their 25 runs were just one shy of the school record, set during a 26-11 win at the University of the Southwest in 2009.  Their 24 hits were two shy of the school record set in the same game against USW.  Meanwhile the Rams set a school record with 22 RBI, and Tyler Kamtz set a new record with six runs scored.  Three individuals, Butch Ballez, Antoine Cole, and Andy Franks, had scored five runs in a single game.  Dakota Lee also had a remarkable individual game, going 4-for-5 with 7 RBI.  He was two RBI short of Al Hemlee's record of nine set in a game at Dallas Baptist in 1983.

Lost in the offensive fireworks, Sam Martin (9-1) put the finishing touches on a remarkable career at Texas Wesleyan.  In two seasons, the senior from Denton, TX, went 21-2 with a 2.53 ERA and 106 strikeouts in 160.1 innings pitched.  On Sunday, he allowed five runs on nine hits in five innings pitched.

The Ram got a two-run double from Adam Turpin and an RBI double from Quavian Lawson while plating four runs in the top of the first.

Both teams scored a pair of runs in the second, but the Rams put the game out of reach in the third.  Texas Wesleyan batted around in the inning and scored six runs on seven hits including a grand-slam from Kamtz.

SAGU came back with three in the bottom of the third, but the offensive onslaught continued in the fourth.  This time the Rams scored five runs on two hits, including the first of two three-run home runs from Lee.

Jake Howeth blasted a three-run homer as part of a four run fifth.  A solo homer from Jonathan Bravo and another three-run shot from Lee capped the scoring at 25-5 in the seventh inning.

Avery Sullivan closed the game with two scoreless innings of relief work, striking out four Lions.

Kamtz finished 4-for-6 with a home run and a double, five RBI, and a school record six runs scored.  Howeth went 2-for-4 with a home run, three RBI, and five runs scored.  Lee went 5-for-5 with a pair of homers, seven RBI, and three runs scored.

The top-five hitters in the Texas Wesleyan order, Bravo, Kamtz, Howeth, Lee, and Turpin all had multi-hit games.  That group combined to go 14-for-24 (.583) with five home runs, 19 RBI, and 18 runs scored.

Despite the impressive victory, the Rams will not advance out of pool play at the SAC Tournament with a record of 1-2.  The team ends the season at 27-26 overall.  At 15-12 in conference play, they were the sixth seed in the SAC Tournament.
