Box Score 2 MIAMI GARDENS, FL: The Texas Wesleyan University volleyball team (1-6) lost in five sets (21-25, 25-16, 25-12, 20-25,15-6) to Northwest University (4-3) before falling to St. Thomas Florida (3-2) 3-1 (19-25, 30-28, 25-23, 25-22) in the 2014 Embry-Riddle Labor Day Tournament on Friday.
The Lady Rams and Lady Eagles squared off in the first match, neither team gaining much advantage in the first set. A
Meghan Finley kill gave the Rams a 6-3 lead before Northwest came back to tie the set at 7 apiece. A short rally later in the set put Wesleyan up 16-11 on an
Alex Hendee kill. The Eagles took a 20-18 lead on a Mattie Jo Johnson kill, before the Lady Rams came charging back to tie the game at 21-21 on a slick
Kristina Gafford kill. Texas Wesleyan finished on a 5-0 run capped by a
Shelby Stinnett kill to take the first set 25-21.
The second set was close early as Stinnett aced a pair of serves to tie the game at 10-10, but the Eagles used a 6-2 run late in the set to tie the match and win the second set, 25-16.
Northwest carried momentum into the third set, jumping out to a 12-5 lead capped by a kill from Dakota Adams. The Eagles made a 6-0 run to grab a 19-7 lead. Stinnett tallied another kill to make a 22-12 game, but the Eagles would not let off the pedal with a 25-12 third set win.
A pair of kills by
Starnisha Bodie gave the Lady Rams an early 3-1 lead in the fourth set, and Texas Wesleyan held a narrow lead early. A 7-3 run capped by a
Lynsay Buell kill gave Wesleyan some breathing room at 21-15. The Eagles landed a 4-0 run to cut the lead to 21-19, but a Hendee kill and a Northwest error tied the match 2-2 with a Lady Ram 25-20 set win.
Northwest posted a 4-0 run to start the final set, capped by an Adams kill. Finley got the Rams on the board with a kill at 4-1, but the Eagles pushed the lead on the way to a 15-6 fifth set, 3-2 match win.
Stinnett led Wesleyan with 14 kills and three service aces. Hendee also had 14 kills to go along with 14 digs. Finley tallied 12 kills while hitting .318 in the match.
Abigail Zipoy had 20 digs in the match.
Lauren Hamaker led all scorers with 27 assists.
Texas Wesleyan jump out to a 10-3 lead capped by a Buell kill to start the match against St. Thomas. The Bobcats cut the margin to 13-10, but Wesleyan over powered the Bobcats with kills from six different Lady Rams to take a 25-19 first set win.
The Bobcats returned to favor, grabbing a 5-0 lead to start the second set. Buell tied the set 8-8 with a kill, and the two teams fought for possession of the lead until a couple of attacking error gave the Bobcats some breathing room at 18-14. The Ram battled back to take a two-point 22-20 lead on a Hendee ace. The two teams traded set point a handful of times before costly errors gave St. Thomas a 30-28 win.
The Lady Rams and Lady Bobcats battled closely again in the third set as the score was tied eight times. The Bobcats tried to hold on to the lead, but Wesleyan fought back and gained a 19-18 lead on another Stinnett kill. St. Thomas would not go away though, and had barely enough to take the third set, 25-23.
The Lady Rams held a slight lead early in the fourth set, pushing the lead to 12-9 on a Hendee kill before the Bobcats were forced to take a timeout. The Bobcats slowly crawled back and finally took the lead on a pair of Sydney Maynard aces. Finley got the Rams within one point on a kill at 23-22, but St. Thomas was able to survive Texas Wesleyan 25-22.
Finley led with 15 kills, hitting .464 in the process. Buell had 13 kills, five block assists, and a solo block. Stinnet tallied a double double with 13 kills and 11 digs. Hamaker notched 31 assists in the match, while Zipoy posted 20 digs.
The Lady Rams will continue in the Labor Day Tourney tomorrow with a match versus the University of Northwestern Ohio at 11:30 am, and will take on Rocky Mountain College at 2:00 pm.
