Lady Rams Split In Day Two

DAYTONA BEACH, FL: The Texas Wesleyan University volleyball team (2-7) split the second day of the Embry-Riddle Labor Day Tournament with a win over the University Northwestern Ohio (3-5) 3-1 (15-25, 25-21, 25-20, 25-17), before taking a loss to #17 Rocky Mountain College (5-2) 3-0 (25-20, 25-19, 25-12) at the ICI Center on Saturday.

The Lady Rams squared off against the Racers of Northwestern Ohio in the first match and the first set was tight until the Racers got hold of a 12-7 lead on 5-0 rally.  The Racers kept a decent lead on the Lady Rams on the way to a 25-15 first set win.
 
Texas Wesleyan fired back in the second set, taking an early lead and punching the throttle, grabbing a five-point 15-10 lead on a Lynsay Buell kill. The Racers made a 6-0 run late to tie the game at 20-20, but a kill by Meghan Finley broke the tie and the Lady Rams were able to force the Racers into a couple errors to secure a 25-21 second set to tie the match.
 
Texas Wesleyan was hitting on all cylinders in the third set, grabbing an early 4-1 lead after a kill by Alex Hendee. The Lady Rams held a slight edge on the Racers until a Samantha Mizzell kill gave Northwestern Ohio a 12-10 lead. The Rams came charging back and tied the set 17-17 on a Hendee kill. Wesleyan ended the set on an 8-3 run to claim the third set, 25-20.
 
The fourth set was played close early once again, but after the a 12-12 tie, the Lady Rams made an 8-1 run capped on a clever Lauren Hamaker kill to take a 20-13 lead. Wesleyan made short work of the Racers from there, as an Abigail Zipoy kill made it match-point, and a Buell kill put the Rams over the top for the win. 
 
Hendee led all scorers with 14 kills, while posting 14 digs. Shelby Stinnett added 10 kills and 12 digs. Hamaker notched 32 assists and 10 digs in the win.
 
In the second match, 17th ranked Rocky Mountain got out to a 3-0 lead before the Lady Rams tied the game 8-8 on a kill by Zipoy. A Hendee kill gave the Rams a slight 13-12 lead. Wesleyan extended the lead to 19-15, before the Bears took a 9-1 run to win the first set 25-20.
 
In the second set the Lady Rams played catch up after Rocky Mountain maintained a slight lead the entire match. A few Wesleyan mistakes capped by a Brooke Myers ace gave the Lady Bears a 14-9 lead. The Rams battled and a kill by Kristina Gafford cut the lead to 20-18, but Rocky Mountain held off the Lady Rams long enough to take a 25-19 second set.
 
Rocky Mountain subdued the Lady Rams in the third set, jumping out to a 14-7 lead. Wesleyan went on a small 4-0 spurt capped by a Stinnett kill to make it a 14-11 game, but the Bears took an 11-1 run to close out the match 25-12.
 
Buell led the Rams with 10 kills. Hamaker tallied 25 assists. Zipoy posted 15 digs for Texas Wesleyan.
 
The Lady Rams will come home to take on Tarleton State University on Monday, September 8 starting at 6:00 pm in the Sid Richardson Center.
