Box Score FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University volleyball team (4-9, 2-1 SAC) notched a 3-0 (25-18, 25-22, 27-25) conference win over St. Gregory's University (5-10, 1-4 SAC) at the Sid Richardson Center on Monday.
The Lady Rams were in control from the first serve, jumping out to a 6-3 lead on a
Shelby Stinnett kill. Texas Wesleyan played very solid while extending the lead to 20-13 on a
Meghan Finley kill. The Lady Rams took the first set on a
Bianca Upshaw kill, winning the match 25-18.
Wesleyan fought to keep a lead early in the second set, but the Cavaliers showed some resolve, sticking around and tying the set at 10-10. The Rams outscored the Cavs 8-4 capped by a
Starnisha Bodie kill to make it an 18-14 game. St. Gregory's cut the lead to a one point deficit at 22-21 on a Cierra Mullins kill. The Lady Rams pulled through with a Stinnett kill before a Cavalier error to win the second set, 25-22.
The Cavaliers took an 8-4 lead on a Dominique Green kill early in the third set, but the Rams fought back to tie the game on a sneaky
Kristina Gafford kill, while allowing St. Gregory's to make their share of mistakes. A Bodie kill made it a 14-13 Wesleyan lead. Tiphani Funk gave the Cavs an 18-16 lead later in the set, but the Rams quickly tied the game again at 18-18 on a Gafford kill. St. Gregory's would not go away, forcing a few Wesleyan errors to stay in the game and tying the game at 25-25. The Lady Rams got back-to-back kills from Stinnett and Finley to take a 27-25 third set win to take the match, 3-0.
"Tonight was a great win," commented head coach Kimberly Weaver. "Meghan Finley had another strong performance and I was pleased with how well we were able to rebound after the Wayland Baptist loss. We are eager to take on SAGU tomorrow."
Finley led the Rams with 11 kills. Stinnett tallied 11 digs and seven kills.
Lauren Hamaker and Gafford each posted 13 assists in the win.
Shaughnessy Hearn led all players with 14 digs.
The Lady Rams will take on rival Southwestern Assemblies of God University tomorrow, September 23 starting at 7:00 pm at the Sid Richardson Center.
