FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University baseball team (6-6) split a doubleheader and a four-game series with 14th ranked Doane College (2-2) at QuikTrip Park on Sunday. The Tigers took game one 12-7, before the Rams took game two 12-8.
In game one, the Tigers pounded out 20 hits to score their 12 runs. Doane got a two-out RBI double from Liam Bedford in the top of the first. The Rams answered with two outs in the bottom of the first with two runs on four hits including a leadoff double from
Rod Lewis and an RBI sinlge from
Dusteyn Suttle.
Doane regained the lead in the second with a two-run single from Matt Cuellar. The Rams answered in the second when Suttle was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, but a solo homer from Andres Rivera in the third gave the Tigers a 4-3 lead.
The Tigers then plated three runs on four hits in the fourth and three more on three hits in the fifth to blow the game open at 10-3.
A two-run homer from Adam Touhey in the seventh brought the score to 12-3. In the bottom of the seventh, the first five Rams all reached base and four of them scored. The inning was highlighted by an RBI double from Hayden Munns that scored Taylor Zamorra from second. However, the rally fell well short at 12-7.
Spencer Pugh (1-0) got the win after allowing three runs on five hits and five walks in six innings.
Ben Russell (1-1) took the loss after allowing six runs on eight hits in 3.1 innings.
The Rams batted around in the first inning of game-two. RBI doubles from
Tyler Kamtz and
Matt Horn highlighted the five-run frame as the Rams took control early.
The Tigers got on the board with a sac fly from Liam Bedford in the third, but the Rams sent 11 men to the plate in the bottom of the inning. Suttle led off with a single, and Johnathan Bravo ripped a triple into the left center gap. The Rams were rolling from there. With two outs,
Tyler Kamtz ripped a two-run single and Suttle followed with an RBI single. Six runs scored in the inning to push the score to 11-1.
The Tigers offense stayed hot and came right back sending 12 men to the plate scoring seven runs on seven hits and an error.
Fortunately for the Rams,
Pasqual Mendoza came on in relief and restored order to the contest. Texas Wesleyan added an insurance run with a sac fly in the sixth from
Jake Howeth.
Mendoza recorded his first save by closing out the final three innings. He allowed no runs on three hits while striking out three.
Ricky Hull (1-0) was credited with the win allowing a hit in one third of an inning.
Kamtz, Suttle, and
Garrett Crook each had two of Texas Wesleyan's 11 hits.
The Rams will return to action next weekend with a three-game series at LSU-Alexandria in Alexandria, LA. Game one of Saturday's doubleheader is scheduled for a 1:30 p.m. start.
