ALEXANDRIA, LA: The Texas Wesleyan University baseball team (6-8) was swept in a doubleheader at LSU-Alexandria (9-6) on Friday. The Generals prevailed 3-0 in the opener of a three-game series and then took a run-shortened 15-1 decision in game two.
In game one,
Mitch McLeod worked around a leadoff double to Randy Frederick. The Rams produced their best scoring chance in the second when
Matt Horn and
Ryan Mendez put together consecutive singles, but LSUA hurler Ryan Touchet was up to the task.
LSUA got to McLeod for an unearned run in the fourth. In the sixth, a Texas Wesleyan error put runners at second and third for Mitch Huckabay who promptly drove in both runners with a single that capped the scoring at 3-0.
McLeod (2-2) was strong in the loss, allowing just one earned run on four hits while striking out four in a complete game seven-inning effort. Touchet raised that performance with a seven inning shutout, allowing the Rams four hits and striking out five.
In game two, the Generals put runs on the board early and often. They sent ten men to the plate in the first inning, eight in the second, and then batted around again in the third.
The Rams actually scored first when they loaded the bases in the top of the first.
Rod Lewis led off the game with a single and scored on a groundout from Horn.
The Generals came back with six runs on four hits, two walks, and a hit batter in the bottom of the inning. That frame was highlighted by a two-run double from Adam Michel.
Four singles and a walk put four more runs on the board in the second. The third inning featured an RBI double from Bond Babin, an RBI triple from Jami Rachal, and a two-run homer from Huckabay leaving LSUA well in front at 14-1.
An RBI single by Garrett O'Friel in the fifth inning accounted for the 15-1 final score.
Pierce Liberta (1-0) got the win after allowing a run on three hits in four innings pitched.
Alex Lopez (1-2) took the loss after allowing four runs on a hit and two walks in 0.2 innings pitched.
The Rams and Generals will complete their three-game series on Saturday. Game time is set for 11:00 a.m.
