FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University baseball team (1-3) suffered a 13-5 loss in game one of a five-game series with Avila University (1-0) at Sycamore Park on Friday.
The Eagles started their season right. Leadoff man Troy Prasertstit drew a leadoff walk and courtesy runner Kenny Baker stole second and scored on a double from Kyle Simmons. Simmons later scored on a defensive miscue to give Avila a quick 2-0 advantage.
Meanwhile E.J. Merlo retired the first eight batters he faced before
Rod Lewis ripped a solid single to left.
Jake Davis followed with a single, and
Tyler Kamtz tied the game with a two-run double off the base of the centerfield wall.
The Eagles did not threaten again until the fifth. Alex Quiros drew a leadoff walk and Prasertstit followed with an infield single. Simmons bunted the runners over to second and third, and Stephen Montisano brought both runs in with a single. The Eagles then loaded the bases and pushed across two more runs with a sac fly from Anthony Biondo and another Texas Wesleyan error.
The Rams came right back in the bottom of the fifth.
Garrett Crook drew a leadoff walk, and
Tanner McMahon singled.
Rod Lewis followed with an RBI single, McMahon scored on a wild pitch, and Kamtz knocked in a run to cut the deficit to 6-5.
The Eagles got all three runs back in the sixth inning with a double from Matt Graham and consecutive RBI singles from Simmons and Montisano.
The Eagles capped the scoring with four runs in the ninth. They batted around and scored four runs on four singles and Texas Wesleyan's fourth error of the contest.
Merlo (1-0) earned the win after allowing five runs on six hits while walking one and striking out three in six innings pitched.
Mitch McLeod (1-1) took the loss after allowing six runs, four earned, on five hits in five innings of work.
Katmz was 1-for-3 with three RBI in the loss, while
Rod Lewis added a 2-for-3 day at the plate.
The Rams and Eagles will play a doubleheader at Sycamore Park on Saturday. Game one is scheduled for a 12:00 p.m. start.
