SHAWNEE, OK: The Texas Wesleyan University baseball team (17-12, 9-2 SAC) pounded out 21 hits en route to a 20-12 win in the finale of a Sooner Athletic Conference series at St. Gregory's University (6-25, 1-10 SAC) on Monday. The win gave Texas Wesleyan a sweep of the three-game series.
After both teams scored single runs in the first inning, the Rams scored six in both the second and third innings. In the second, the Rams sent ten men to the plate and scored six runs on five hits including doubles from
Jake Howeth and
Tyler Kamtz. In the third, the Rams sent eleven men to the plate and scored six runs on seven singles including two-run safety's from Kamtz and
Jose Martinez.
St. Gregory's battled back with two runs in the third and three more in the fourth including a two-run double from Nick Hoffman that cut the score to 13-6.
Texas Wesleyan put the matter out of reach in the sixth inning.
Dylan Measells' first collegiate home run, a solo shot, started a four-run frame that saw the Rams bat around for a third time in the game. An SGU error in the seventh led to two more runs to bring the score to 19-6.
St. Gregory's took advantage of a Texas Wesleyan error that extended the bottom of the seventh to score four runs, and another miscue in the eighth that brought two runs in.
Rod Lewis singled and scored in the ninth to cap the scoring at 20-12.
Bailey Laws (1-0) picked up the win with 1.2 innings of scoreless relief work. He allowed two hits and a walk while striking out one. Tyler Hebert (2-4) took the loss after allowing 12 runs, 11 earned on 10 hits in 2.1 innings.
Jake Davis went 4-for-6 with 2 RBI and 4 runs scored in the win. Howeth, Kamtz, and Lewis each had three hits, while Kamtz and Martinez both drove in three.
The Rams were scheduled to play at Austin College on Tuesday, but that game has been cancelled. They will return to action when they host 11th ranked Oklahoma City University in an SAC series Friday and Saturday. Friday's opener is scheduled for a 3:00 p.m. at QuikTrip Park in Grand Prairie, TX.
