PLAINVIEW, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University baseball club (19-26, 11-11 SAC) dropped two games to Wayland Baptist University (32-20, 13-7 SAC) at Wilder Field on Friday. The Rams fell behind early in game one and took a 6-3 loss before taking a 16-4 loss in the night cap.
Â
The temperature at Wilder Field was a normal 77 degrees at game time, but the wind could not be further from normal. The system of storms that moved through North Texas today were pushed by a strong southwest wind that stayed around 30 MPH the entire day.
Â
Wayland jumped on top of the Rams quickly in game one, with a pair of runs in the first two innings. The Pioneers were helped in the first inning by a pair of Ram errors, while Chris Buitron and Will Bass each tallied a RBI hit in the second for a 4-0 lead.
Â
Jake Howeth put the Rams on the board in the fourth inning with a one out homerun slam down the left field line.
Â
Wayland Baptist added a couple more in the sixth on a Bass two RBI single that snaked through the left side to make it a 6-1 advantage.
Â
Tyler Kamtz led off the top of the seventh with a base hit back up the middle.
Jake Davis stepped in the box and promptly sent a moon shot over the left field fence to cut the lead to 6-3. The Rams could not continue the rally though, and WBU secured the game one win.
Â
Dylan Measells went 2 for 3. Howeth went 1 for 3 with a home run. Davis went 1 for 3 with a homer in the game.
Â
In game two, the gusty winds wreaked havoc on Wesleyan pitchers as the Pioneers hit eight extra base hits, five of them home runs.
Â
Texas Wesleyan put up the first big inning with a three run second that gave the Rams a 3-1 lead. Â Davis singled up the middle to start things off, followed by a
Rod Lewis shot that sailed over the left field wall for a two run home run. Nathan Dillon kept the inning going with a double to right field before
Ryan Mendez capped the inning with a RBI single to center field.
Â
The Pioneers matched that effort with three run in the bottom of the second to regain a 4-3 lead, and followed that up with a six run third inning that featured a pair of two RBI home runs. Â
Â
Wayland Baptist unloaded again in the fourth inning with six runs on five hits that oddly enough did not involve a home run. An error to lead off the inning allowed a runner on for an Ernesto Lizardi RBI single. That would start a long string of hits that was capped by a Josh Alexander two RBI single to make it a 16-3 game.
Â
Texas Wesleyan got a run back in the fifth after Howeth crushed a ball over the center field to make it a 16-4 contest that would eventually be the final.
Â
Lewis went 2 for 3 with a pair of RBI. Howeth went 2 for 3 with a solo shot. Dillon went 2 for 3 for the Rams.
Â
Texas Wesleyan will look to bounce back in the final game of the series tomorrow. First pitch is set for 1:00 pm.Â
