Crusaders take Double-Dip from Rams

GRAND PRAIRE, TX:  The Texas Wesleyan University baseball team (17-17) was swept in a doubleheader with Dallas Christian College on Tuesday.  The Crusaders took game one 6-3, and game two 5-3.

The games were originally scheduled to be played at DCC, but were moved to QuikTrip Park.  The Rams will now play at DCC on April 15.

In game one, the Crusaders broke up a scoreless tie in the fourth inning, when Kale McQuillen tripled and scored on a single from Jordan Nowels.

Dallas Christian broke the game open with four runs in the fifth inning.  The Crusaders started the inning with four consecutive hits including RBI knocks from Jacob Houpt and Alex Dobbie.

The Rams got on the board in the bottom of the fifth.  With Jake Davis at first, Dusteyn Suttle singled to center, and, when the ball eluded DCC centerfielder Ronald Jackson, Suttle flew all the way around the bases.

Chris Wallace started the sixth inning with a single and scored on a sac bunt from Nick Tovar to push the Crusader's lead to 6-2.

Rod Lewis drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the seventh and scored on a double from Davis.  Suttle followed with a walk to bring the tying run to the plate, but Cal Westland ended the game with a 4-6-3 double play.

Westland tossed all seven innings in the win.  He allowed three runs, only one earned, on six hits and four walks.  Stephen Yancey (0-4) took the loss after allowing a run on four hits in four innings of work.

Davis and Suttle both went 2-for-3 at the plate in the game one loss.

In game two, the Crusaders exploded for five runs in the third inning.  With one out, DCC strung together five consecutive hits including an RBI double from McQuillen and a two-run double from Nowels.

The Rams answered in the bottom of the inning with a two-run single from Dylan Measells, but another big double play got the Crusaders out of the inning without any further damage.

In the fourth, Garrett Crook led off with a single.  The Rams loaded the bases with just one out, but Jacob Houpt got out of the inning with only one run allowed.

Bryce Jones and Kyle Spurgen combined to record the final 11 outs of the game in order for Dallas Christian.

Houpt got the win after allowing three runs on eight hits and two walks in four innings.  Spurgen picked up the save with a perfect ninth inning.

Colton Clanton (1-1) took the loss after allowing five runs on six hits and a walk in three innings of work.  Connor Zamora and Avery Sullivan combined for four scoreless innings of relief work.

Howeth and Crook each had a pair of hits in game two.

The Rams will return to action this weekend with a three-game Sooner Athletic Conference series at No. 7 Oklahoma Baptist.  Friday's series opener is scheduled for a 4:00 p.m. start in Shawnee, OK.
