WINFIELD, KS: The Texas Wesleyan University women's tennis team (1-0) took a 5-1 win at Southwestern College (0-1) in their return to the court on Tuesday. Texas Wesleyan had not competed in women's tennis since 2002.
Emily Murchland took a win over Morgan Hughes in line one singles (6-4, 4-6, 10-7). Line two went to Texas Wesleyan as well as
Amy Leiu defeated Sydney Shields (6-0, 3-0-ret).
The Rams swept the doubles action on the day.
Katy Foster and Leiu defeated Huges and Anna Mankoski 8-1. Murchland and
Alexa Mentesana defeated Savannah Pfau and Shields 8-5, and
Laura Grunden and
Emily Rodriguez topped Pfau and Nya Cheatham (9-7).
Southwestern got their lone point in line four singles after
Ashton Willis retired trailing a set to none (6-3) against Mankoski.
The Lady Rams started the day with a match at Cowley Community College. Individually the Rams took 5 wins. Murchland defeated Bruna Chavez in No. 1 singles. Leiu topped Eva Forneiron in No. 2 singles, and Foster defeated Kasey Coker in No. 3 singles. In doubles action, Foster and Leiu defeated Chavez and Forneiron 8-5, and Murchland and Mentesana defeated Stormi Tipton and Peyton Adams 8-2.
The Rams will return to action against the same two teams September 11-12 at the Tiger/Jinx Invitational.
