Golden Eagles Clip Lady Rams

SILOAM SPRINGS, AR: The Texas Wesleyan University volleyball team (13-7, 2-1 SAC) lost a 3-1 (16-25, 25-15, 25-20, 25-22) match against John Brown University (11-5, 1-2 SAC) at Bill George Arena on Friday.

The Lady Rams sprinted out of the gate to start the match. Abby Zipoy popped three consecutive kills and Wesleyan grabbed an 8-0 lead in the first set. Kiersten Mebane posted back-to-back kills in between a pair of Zipoy service aces to give the Rams a 14-2 advantage. Wesleyan never let John Brown get anything going, taking a 25-16 win.

Texas Wesleyan hit .333 in the first set, but never hit better than .100 in the remaining three sets as the Lady Rams fell ill with errors and the home squad took full advantage. JBU bounced out to a 5-1 lead to start the second set, but the Rams battled back and cut the lead to 14-11 with an Alanna Hayhurst kill. TWU was held to only four more points and attacking errors were aplenty on the way to a 25-15 loss.

The third set was nearly identical with the Golden Eagles grabbing a healthy lead early and defended it well. Despite out-scoring JBU 8-5 to end the set, the Eagles were able to hold off a comeback to take a 25-20 win.

John Brown once again knocked the Rams on their heels with a 4-0 run to start the fourth set. Later in the set Starnisha Bodie highlighted a 4-0 rally to tie the set at 11 apiece. The score was knotted up six more times, as the Lady Rams fought to keep the match alive with a Shelby Stinnett kill to tie the game at 17-17. JBU out-scored the Rams 8-5 from there though, and took the match with a 25-22 win.

Zipoy led the Rams with 13 kills. Kristina Gafford tallied 27 assists and nine digs in the match. Shaughnessy Hearn had 25 digs. Bodie notched seven kills in the loss.

The Lady Rams will look to rebound with a match versus Bacone College in Muskogee, OK tomorrow starting at 11:00 am.
