Lady Rams Tame Lions

WAXAHACHIE, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University volleyball team (25-4, 12-4 SAC) took a win in straight sets (29-27, 25-15, 25-22) at Southwestern Assemblies of God University (15-14, 7-8 SAC) on Tuesday.
 
In the first set, the Lady Rams battled their way out to an 11-7 lead after a 5-0 rally highlighted by a pair of Alanna Hayhurst kills. The Lady Lions recovered nicely though, tying the game at 19 apiece with a 5-0 run of their own. The two teams went back and forth until a Lady Lion ace made it set point, prompting a Texas Wesleyan timeout. The Lady Rams held on to the set tightly, trying to keep SAGU from scoring two in a row. The game was all knotted at 27-27, when Shelby Stinnet laid into one for a kill before Carli Owens and Hayhurst went back-to-back with blocks to lift the Rams to an exciting 29-27.
 
The second set proved to be a dominating effort for the TXWES, jumping out to a 14-4 advantage capped by a Kayla Hayes service ace. Britni Mohle tacked on a kill to keep the lop-sided lead at 19-9. Brianna Jaramillo and Stinnett tallied the last three points to take a 25-15 win.
 
The third set was close to start, as the score was tied five times. SAGU the game at 10-10 before a 10-4 Wesleyan run capped by a Jaramillo smash gave the Rams a 20-14 lead. The Lady Lions were not done defending home court and took a 7-2 rally to cut the lead down to a one-point, 22-21 deficit. The Lady Rams dug in from there, and Mohle capped the set off by earning the last three points with kills to win 25-22.
 
Chalon Anderson led all players with 17 digs. Hayhurst posted a double-double behind 13 kills, 15 digs, and 6 blocks. Sasha Robinson added 40 assists in the win. Stinnett tacked on 11 digs. Owens led all players with seven blocks. Mohle posted 10 kills in the match.
 
Texas Wesleyan finished the match with 10 team blocks, while hitting .263 and holding their opponent to .188. With win number 25, the Rams have now posted the most wins since 2007.
 
The Lady Rams will get set for senior day on Saturday, October 29 when they take on St. Gregory's University in a grudge match at the Sid Richardson Center. First serve is set for 2:05 pm.
