FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University baseball team (0-1) dropped a 7-2 decision on Opening Day against the Jarvis Christian College Bulldogs (1-0) at Sycamore Park on Friday.
The Bulldogs did all of their damage in the fourth and seventh innings. Jarvis finished with only one more hit than the Rams, but they turned their 9 hits into 7 runs.
Jake Davis delivered the first hit of the season when he beat out a grounder to the left side of the infield in the second inning.
In the third,
Alex Gudac drove a ball over the Jarvis right fielder's head for a two-out triple.
Blake Seaton followed with a base hit, and the Rams snared a 1-0 lead.
Zach Aitken, a senior transfer out of Lamar University, held the Bulldogs hitless until Javion Randle doubled with one out in the top of the fourth. Carlos Andrade then tied the game with a single, and Angel Merced touched off a two-run home run to right-center putting the Bulldogs on top 3-1.
With one out in the bottom of the fourth,
Casey Moses singled and advanced on a sac bunt from
Jake Davis.
Dylan Measells knocked Moses in with a two-out single.
The Rams put two on with one out in the fifth, but Emilio Griego induced an inning-ending double play to preserve Jarvis' one-run lead.
In the seventh, the Bulldogs got an RBI single from DeAndre McGuire and a sac fly from Randle before Andrade pushed the score to 7-2 with a two-run double to straight away center field.
Aitken (0-1) took the loss after allowing 3 runs on 3 hits in 4 innings of work. Griego (1-0) tossed a complete game allowing two runs on eight hits while striking out 5 and walking none.
Davis and Seaton each had a pair of hits for the Rams.
The Rams and Bulldogs will complete their 3-game series with a doubleheader at Sycamore Park tomorrow. Game one is scheduled for a 12:00 p.m. start.
