Lady Rams Take Sweep of MACU

FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University softball team (16-20, 7-5 SAC) took a sweep (4-0, 5-4 (8)) of Mid-America Christian University (19-13, 4-6 SAC) in the annual Think Pink game at Sycamore Park on Saturday afternoon.

The Texas Wesleyan softball program raises money and awareness of breast cancer through the Think Pink game and this year the Lady Rams chose the ATHENA Society of Burleson as their organization. The ATHENAS assist in helping uninsured and underinsured cancer patients with expenses and have raised over 650,000 dollars to date.

The Lady Rams quickly grabbed a 1-0 edge in the first inning that began when Kayla Prachyl did her lead-off job going opposite field for a base hit and swiping second to put herself in scoring position. Bailey Terry hit a ball deep enough to score her from third for a RBI sacrifice fly to make it 1-0.

Texas Wesleyan added two more in the third on a Terry two RBI triple laced down the right field line and into the corner to make it a 3-0 advantage.

Prachyl struck again in the fourth to plate one on a RBI liner into center field to give Wesleyan a 4-0 lead.

Brittany Rosenberry (7-8) once again did an outstanding job of managing a complete game shutout in the win. She only allowed one hit, walked none, and sat down one for TWU.

Prachyl led the team going 3 for 3 with one RBI and two runs scored. Bailey went 1 for 2 with three RBI. Vasquez went 2 for 2 in the win.

In game two, Texas Wesleyan took an early lead in the second inning by playing some small ball. Terry led off the inning with a walk before the Lady Rams did their job by moving her to third. Vasquez beat out a RBI infield single off the pitcher's glove to make it 1-0 in favor of the Rams

The Evangels tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the third on a Cassidy Hart RBI double off the center field fence. Mykah Smith kept the rally going with a two out two RBI double off the right center fence to grab a 3-1 edge.

Wesleyan put together a two spot in the bottom of the fourth to square things up at three apiece. After Lauren Davis and Bailey Terry led off with back-to-back singles, Kaley Bathclear brough one home with an infield base hit before Vasquez got the tying run home with a RBI sacrifice bunt to make it 3-3

The Evangels got a run in the fifth on a Mykah Smith solo shot over the right field wall to gain a 4-3 lead.

The Lady Rams tied the game in the fifth, again on a Prachyl infield single and a steal of second base. West moved the runner on a sacrifice bunt, and Davis brought her home with a laser shot to left-center.

The two teams took their knotted 4-4 game into extra innings, and Amanda Windham (7-7) shut down the opposition in the top of the inning.

Wesleyan found themselves with the bases loaded after West beat out a bunt for a base hit and MACU intentionally walked Davis. Terry put the ball in play in the lane between home plate and the pitcher's mound, and Evangel catcher Katie Gracey could not get a handle on the ball on the play at the plate and the Rams took the game 5-4 on a walk-off error.

Windham picked up the win tossing four innings of relief work. She allowed one run on just one hit, walked one, while fanning four.

Vasquez went 1 for 2 with two RBI. Davis went 1 for 2 with one RBI. Batchlear went 1 for 3 with one RBI.

"We didn't let up today," commented head coach Shannon Gower. "We had a calmer presence offensively and defensively than we did yesterday and that made the difference. As a team we picked each other up in all categories. We played as a team today."

The Lady Rams also cut their errors down from 8 yesterday to just one today which went a long way to help keep the team effective with the game on the line.

The Lady Rams will catch their collective breath and will take on NAIA No. 2 Oklahoma City University in a double header on April 6, starting at 2:00 pm at Sycamore Park.
