GRAND PRAIRIE, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University baseball team (27-14, 11-4 SAC) swept a three-game Sooner Athletic Conference series from No. 22 Wayland Baptist University (32-12, 9-6 SAC) with a convincing 10-0 win in Saturday's series finale. The win stretches Texas Wesleyan's current winning streak to 12 games.
After
Zach Aitken and
Ricky Hull tossed complete games in Friday's doubleheader,
Stephen Yancey took the hill for the Rams and continued the trend of 'no bullpen necessary.' Yancey (7-1) needed just 87 pitches to work all seven innings. He scattered five hits and matched his season-high with seven strikeouts.
The Rams got on the board in the second inning. After back-to-back singles from
Alex Gudac and
Jonathan Bravo put runners at the corners,
Jake Davis laid down a safety squeeze to score Gudac. Two batters later,
Ryan Adam laced an RBI single to center, and the Rams led 2-0.
In the third,
Erick Quesada reached on catcher's interference and eventually scored on a Pioneer fielding error. The Rams had the bases loaded the bases with just one out, but Jordie Henry worked out of the jam allowing just the one run to score.
In the fourth, Adam reached on a leadoff error and
Blake Seaton stretched a shot to right into a double.
Casey Moses and
Erick Quesada promptly drove both runners in to take a 5-0 advantage.
The lead swelled to 8-0 in the fifth with singles from Gudac, Bravo, Adam, and Moses.
In the seventh,
Blake Seaton ended the contest early when his two-run triple pushed the score to 10-0.
Henry (6-2) took the loss after allowing seven runs, four earned, on seven hits in four innings pitched.
The Rams outhit the Pioneers 11-5.
Alex Gudac went 3-for-4. Seaton went 2-for-4 with 3 RBI. Adam and Bravo each added a pair of hits.
The Rams will return to action on Tuesday, when they take on Arlington Baptist College at The Ballpark in Grand Prairie. That game is scheduled for a 3:00 p.m. start.
Ramblings
- The Rams lead the all-time series with Wayland Baptist 12-6. They are 37-26 all-time in SAC play.
- Wayland Baptist is coached by former Texas Wesleyan head coach Brad Bass who led the Rams to a record of 258-182-1 in nine seasons (1987-95).
- Seaton's triple was the 22nd of the season for Texas Wesleyan. That is one behind LSU-Shreveport for the lead in the NAIA and one short of matching the school's single season record set in 2005.
