Lady Rams Upset No. 1 Stars in Walk-off Fashion! Advance to Championship Game

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK: The Texas Wesleyan University softball team (27-28) advanced to the championship game with a 3-2 upset win in walk-off fashion, knocking off NAIA No. 1 Oklahoma City University (58-2) in the final round robin game of the 2016 Sooner Athletic Conference tournament at Ann Lacy Stadium on Saturday.

The Lady Rams and Stars were enthralled in a defensive battle through the first four innings of play. Brittany Rosenberry (14-12) once again did a brilliant job of slowing down the top ranked team in the land. The junior from pitcher has been stifling opponents all year and this time the Lady Rams offense got her a win in the clutch.

The Stars finally got on the board in the top of the fifth Laci Joyner doubled to left before Shelbi Legg brought the run home on a sacrifice RBI. Oklahoma City was helped by an error to plate the second run to take a 2-0 lead.

Georgia Wall went five scoreless innings with six strikeouts before the Lady Rams chased her out of the ball game in the seventh after Bailey Terry laced a liner into center for a single.

Abby Meador (23-1) came into the game in relief of the Stars starter and promptly struck out two Lady Rams to bring Wesleyan to their final out. Lauren Davis was patient and found her way on base with a walk to put the tying run on base.

Shelby Reddington was asked to step up to the plate in a huge pinch hit situation, and delivered a shot into the left center gap for two RBI to tie the game. Senior outfielder Haley Neill played hero by punching a two out, walk-off RBI base hit to left field to win the game 3-2.

Meador suffered her first loss of the season by allowing two runs on two hits in two thirds of an inning pitched.

Reddington went 1 for 1 with two RBI. Terry went 1 for 2 with a run scored. Neill finished 1 for 2 with the game winning RBI.

For Wesleyan this may be the biggest win in program history, taking down a top ranked opponent to advance to a conference championship game.

The Stars and Lady Rams both finished 2-1 in pool play with Texas Wesleyan winning the head-to-head game which means the Lady Rams will take on third ranked St. Gregory's University in the SAC Championship game tomorrow starting at 2:00 pm
