Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Lady Rams Hit Big Ten With Pair of KWU Tourney Wins

SALINA, KS: The Texas Wesleyan University volleyball team (10-0) made it double digits with a pair of 3-1 wins over Tabor College (1-3), 23-25, 25-17, 25-17, 25-16 and Friends University (2-5), 25-12, 24-26, 25-17, 25-15 at the Kansas Wesleyan Tournament on Friday.

The Lady Rams had to dig out of some holes in the first set as the Blue Jays kept a slight edge. Wesleyan cut the lead down continuously, but could not a big run down the stretch. The Blue Jays would go on to take the first set, 25-23.

In the second set the Rams found a gap in the defense to take a 7-2 lead that was capped by a Brianna Jaramillo kill.  The Blue Jays cut the lead down to 14-11 with an Amy Horner kill, and then brought the game to 17-15 by way of Kendra Kroeker swat. The Lady Rams outscored their opponent 8-1 from there, capped by a Shelby Stinnett kill to take the set, 25-17.

Wesleyan got out to a 13-3 advantage in the third, Alanna Hayhurst giving the Rams their largest lead of the match. The Rams kept a 10-point lead on the Blue Jays, and led 23-10 on a Brittni Mohle kill. Tabor got back in the game, due to some Wesleyan errors, making the game closer than it looked. A Tabor error would give the Rams the win though, 25-17.

The fourth set was played closer, with the Rams getting the first edge at 11-7 on a Carli Owens kill. That was all Texas Wesleyan needed to get a spark as Kiersten Mebane made it a 19-11 lead with a kill. Mohle picked up a kill before two Tabor errors made it a 25-16 match win.

Stinnett led all players with 13 kills and also picked up 16 digs in the match. Hayhurst also posted a double-double with 12 kills and 12 digs. Sasha Robinson notched a double-double with 39 assists and 13 digs in the win. Chalon Anderson led the team with 18 digs.

Texas Wesleyan posted an 8-4 lead on an Owens kill to start the match with Friends University. The Lady Rams outscored the Eagles 10-2 after a Sasha Robinson sneaky kill made it 24-10. Robinson pulled the rug out again to give the Rams a 25-12 win.

The Eagles played the Rams close to start the second, but Friends took the lead and was stingy with it. Friends took a 17-12 lead before the Lady Rams cut the lead to 20-18 on a Jaramillo smash. Texas Wesleyan tied the game on an Anderson service ace to share a 24-24 set. The Eagles would come up with two points to hold off the Rams, 26-24.

With the match tied 1-1, Wesleyan kept the Eagles at bay with a slight edge early. TXWES started to pull away, taking a six-point, 19-13 advantage on an Owens kill. Hayhurst made it set point at 24-16 on a kill, and Wesleyan handled business to take a 2-1 match edge with a 25-17 win.

The Rams kept the tempo high, taking a 12-10 lead and turning it into a 21-13 lead with help from Stinnet and Mohle, who each had a pair of kills during the run. Morgan Reese ended the match on a slick kill from the setting positon for a 25-15 win.

Stinnett posted 14 kills and 15 digs. Robinson notched 27 assists and 17 kills. Hayhurst grabbed 12 kills and 15 digs. Anderson had 21 digs in the win.

The Lady Rams will finish the tournament with matches against Benedictine College at 12:00 pm and Southwestern College at 4:30 pm tomorrow.
