Lady Rams Fall At SAGU

WAXAHACHIE, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University volleyball team (20-3, 9-3 SAC) suffered its first road loss of the season to SAGU (20-5, 11-1 SAC) in a 3-0 (25-23, 25-19, 25-22) match at the Full Life Center on Tuesday.

The first set was extremely tight, with neither team enjoying more than a three-point edge the entire way. The score was knotted up at 18 apiece before the Lion got some breathing room with a 3-0 run. Tierra Coverson turned the tide with a punch through the middle of the defense, before a Shelby Stinnett kill made it a 21-21 game. The set saw 14 ties before Paulyae Hawkins put down an ace to ice the set.

SAGU played especially patient in the second set, relying on their back line often. TXWES held a slight edge until the Lions found daylight with a 7-1 run for a 13-9 lead. The Rams could never make up ground, and SAGU held on for a 25-19 win.

The Lady Rams kept an slim edge with smart placement in their attack. Brittni Mohle found the court on a kill before Tierra Coverson and Brianna Jaramillo added a block 15-13 lead. The set drew even down the stretch as SAGU survived long enough to find the floor or force a Ram error. Dana Lohrke kept the score even at 19-19, but the Lions outscore Texas Wesleyan 6-3 to take the match win.

Jaramillo and Coverson led the team with seven kills each. Mohle and Stinnett each tallied six kills in the match. Stinnett also added 13 digs. Sasha Robinson posted 21 assists.

TXWES has gone 34 matches since taking a straight set loss, dating back to a 3-0 loss to Oklahoma City on October 1, 2016.

The all-time series is now 27-8 in favor of Texas Wesleyan. The Rams had won the last eight coming into this season.

The Lady Rams will continue their road stretch with a match against Oklahoma Panhandle State University on Thursday, October 26 starting at 7 p.m.
