FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University volleyball team (17-1, 7-1 SAC) cruised past Central Christian College (4-11, 1-7 SAC) on 80's Night at the Sid Richardson Center on Friday. The Rams are now winners of nine straight.
The Lady Rams and company sang along to 80's classics in warm-ups and adorned totally radical 80's era threads in celebration of the decade.
TXWES, the conference leader in the hitting percentage (.255, T9th in NAIA), shot out of the gate in set one. The Rams posted an 8-2 lead to start that included five straight kills, capped on one by
Shelby Stinnett. Stinnett came back with an ace for a 17-4 lead. Texas Wesleyan kept the pedal to the metal as Jaramillo floored the last four points of the set in a decisive win.
The Tigers hung around in the second set staying within two points at 13-11 on a Morgan Cook block, but that only spurred the Rams offense. TXWES went on an 11-2 run that included three aces to grab a 24-13 advantage.
Kiersten Mebane ended the set on a slam to take the set 25-17.
The Lady Rams squashed any momentum the Tigers might have had coming out of the second set with a 12-1 rally capped by the last of four Altman aces. The Rams completely smothered the Tigers in the third set as
Dana Lohrke chimed in with four kills in the 25-7 win.
It was a break-out for
Hannah Altman in the win. The talented setter got nearly a full match at her natural position and was electric. Her serves were near untouchable as she floated some and fired others, keeping the Tigers defense off-balance all night. She posted a career high six aces, adding four kills and 23 assists in the win. The junior from North Central Texas College has slightly pivoted into a key defensive role and a change of pace compliment to setter and reigning SAC Newcomer of the Year,
Sasha Robinson.
Tierra Coverson added another 5 blocks to her already impressive defensive campaign. She also had nine kills, hitting .467. The junior from San Angelo is currently tied for seventh in the nation in blocks per set at 1.3.
Brianna Jaramillo also added nine kills, while Stinnett posted seven kills, 12 digs, and three aces.
TXWES, SAGU, and OCU all sit at 7-1 in conference play at the midpoint of the season. SAGU plays Central Christian College tomorrow, in what has become an extremely tough back-to-back for road teams this season.
The Lady Rams will take on the Oklahoma City University Stars tomorrow as a part of Parent and Alumni Weekend. The day starts with an alumni match at 10 am, followed by brunch at 11 am. The Rams and Stars will face-off at 1 pm at the Sid Richardson Center. The day will conclude with a Ramily Cookout at 3 pm. All parents and volleyball alumni are welcome to attend.
