Lady Rams Fall Short Against Dillard, 65-61

By Cameron Irvine

FORT WORTH, TX: Texas Wesleyan had Dillard on the ropes at the Sid Richardson Center Saturday afternoon, but ultimately couldn't pull off the upset, falling 65-61. The Rams, on a six-game slide have lost five of those games by nine points or less.

Keeping Wesleyan in the game all day was Evie Whorley, who bested her season high of 17 points just two games ago with 20 against Dillard, collecting a season-high 10 rebounds in the process. Alycia Louallen contributed 13 points and four boards off the bench (5-of-7 shooting).

The Lady Rams led 30-23 at the break but their lead evaporated in the first three minutes of the third quarter when Dillard went on a 7-0 run. Shaelynn Moore's three for the Devils with 4:34 to go in the third helped give Dillard their first lead since 13-11 in the first frame. Moore, the team's leading scorer on the season (14.4 per game) led the Devils with 15 points.

Wesleyan charged back in the fourth but never could take the lead - getting within one on Whorley's jumper with 9:15 remaining (43-44). Dillard went on an 11-2 run in the next 4:03 and limited the Lady Rams almost exclusively to solid outside looks. Wesleyan hit its first fourth quarter shot in the paint with 38 seconds left, Adrianna Davis' layup. Davis had nine points, nine rebounds, three steals and three asissts in 22 minutes off the bench.

Tomi Sanchez put in eight points and five rebounds, hitting all three of her shots. Nicole Gleason managed six points, three rebounds and two assists despite fouling out. The Lady Rams suffered from the turnover bug (24), just the fourth time this season the team has had more than 18. Those turnovers turned into 24 points for Dillard.

Wesleyan welcomes Mary Hardin-Baylor tomorrow to the Sid Richardson Center at 4 p.m., the last non-conference tilt of the season. Sonner Athletic Conference play resumes January 4 when the Lady Rams travel to McPherson, Kansas to face Central Christian, who sits in last place in conference (0-4, 1-11 overall).
