FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University baseball team (5-2) pounded out 24 hits in a doubleheader sweep of Jarvis Christian College (7-6). The Rams won with matching scores of 8-7 and 8-7.
In response to some proposed rule changes by Major League Baseball, the Rams made their own tweak to the rules playing a doubleheader consisting of two scheduled 8-inning games.
In game one, the Rams started hot. An RBI single from
Julio Ibarra followed by a two-run knock from
Aidan Laurini highlighted a 3-run first inning.
The Bulldogs got an RBI single from Chase Martinez in the second and a solo homer from Carlos Andrade in the fourth.
Chandler Schoelkopf led off the fifth with a double and scored on a sharp single from
Casey Moses.
Chase Sliva and Ibarra both singled and scored in the sixth to push the score to 6-2.
In the seventh, D'Andre McGuire singled with two on and flew around the bases on a three-base error, bringing the Bulldogs within a run. The Rams responded in the bottom of the inning with an RBI double from
Blake Seaton and an RBI groundout from
Garrett Crook.
In the eighth, after an RBI single from Martinez, a single from Angel Guillen cut the score to 8-7 and put the tying run at third. Jarvis tried to execute a first-and-third double steal, but the Rams were up to the task as
Casey Moses cut the runner down at the plate.
Andrew O'Brien (2-0) picked up the win with 6.2 innings while allowing four runs on seven hits and striking out six.
Wade Regas notched his second save of the season, allowing one earned run in 1.1 innings.
In game two, the Bulldogs jumped ahead 6-1 through the top of the third inning. The Rams began to chip away at the deficit with a two-run single from
Caden Williams and an RBI single from Laurini.
A solo home run from Ibarra in the fifth and a bases clearing double from Seaton in the sixth gave the Rams an 8-6 lead.
Jarvis got one run back in the seventh, but
Brad Sugg nailed down his first save with a perfect eighth inning.
Evan Rogers (2-0) earned the win with 5.2 innings of relief work. He allowed two runs on six hits while striking out four.
The Rams recorded 13 hits in game one and 11 hits in game two. Seaton led the attack, going 6-for-8 with two doubles and four RBI's on the day.
The Rams will return to action on Valentine's Day when they host UT-Dallas. That game is scheduled for a 2:00 p.m. start at Sycamore Park.
