OKLAHOMA CITY, OK: The Texas Wesleyan University baseball team (12-6, 2-1 SAC) took a three-game Sooner Athletic Conference series at Mid-America Christian University (8-14, 1-2 SAC) by sweeping a doubleheader on Saturday. The Rams took game one 10-0 behind a complete game one-hit shutout from
Alex Lopez and then rallied for a 10-7 win in game two.
In game one, Lopez backed up his recent SAC Pitcher of the Week award by taking a no-hitter into the sixth inning of the seven-inning ballgame. He faced the minimum in the first five innings. The lone blemish was a leadoff error in the second inning, which Lopez promptly erased with a 1-6-3 double-play.
With one out in the sixth inning, Pedro Varela singled to right on a 2-2 count to break up the no-no.
While Lopez was busy shutting down the Evangels, the Rams' offense came to life.
Chase Sliva led off the third inning with a triple to right. An RBI single from
Casey Moses, a double from
Blake Seaton, and a two-run double from
Luis Roman capped off a three-run inning.
Moses led off the fifth with a single and Seaton followed with a two-run home run. Later in the inning, an RBI single from
Aidan Laurini pushed the score to 6-0.
In the sixth, a MACU error and a bases-clearing double from Laurini led to a four-run frame to cap the scoring at 10-0.
Lopez (3-0) allowed only three baserunners while facing just one batter over the minimum. He erased one baserunner with a double-play in the second and another when he picked Kevin Lentzner off first base in the seventh. He allowed just the one hit and one walk while striking out four.
A senior from Ovila, TX, Lopez was named SAC Pitcher of the Week last week after a complete game 2-hit shutout of Our Lady of the Lake University. His performance on Saturday, lowered his season ERA to 0.62, and he has yet to start a game that he did not finish, recording three complete games in his three starts (6 total appearances).
Nolberto Rendon (1-2) took the loss after allowing six runs on 10 hits in five innings of work.
The Rams racked up 14 hits in the contest. Moses, Seaton, and Roman, batting 1-2-3 in the order, combined to go 7-for-12 at the plate with two doubles, a home run, five RBI's, and six runs scored. Laurini was 2-for-4 with a double and 4 RBI.
In game two, the Rams scored first with an RBI single from
Julio Ibarra in the top of the first, but MACU came right back with three runs in the bottom of the inning.
Roman tied the game with a two-run bomb in the third, but the Evangels answered with a run in the bottom of the inning.
In the fifth,
Chandler Schoelkopf scored from third on a wild pitch and Ibarra knocked Roman in with a single to give the Rams the lead at 5-4. Once again, MACU had an answer. The Evangels plated three runs on five hits and an error in the bottom of the fifth.
The score remained 7-5 until the seventh. A hit batter, a walk, and a bunt single started the merry-go-round for the Rams. Ibarra knocked in a run with a ground ball,
Aidan Laurini plated another with a double,
Alex Gudac recorded an RBI single and
Chase Sliva knocked in a run during a 5-run inning that pushed the lead to 10-7.
Brad Sugg (1-0) picked up his first win as a Ram. The junior transfer from Cedar Valley College worked two scoreless innings of relief.
Wade Regas locked down his third save of the season with a scoreless seventh.
The Rams pounded out 11 more hits in the game-two win. Roman went 3-for-3 at the plate with a home run, two RBI, and three runs scored. Laurini and Gudac were both 2-for-4 at the plate.
The Rams will return to action on Tuesday, when they host Austin College. That game is scheduled for a 2:30 p.m. start at Sycamore Park.
