FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University volleyball team (16-1, 6-1 SAC) extended the streak to eight consecutive wins after a big 3-1 (25-23, 22-25, 25-12, 25-22) victory over John Brown University (16-5, 5-2 SAC) at the Sid Richardson Center on Saturday.
Â
"I knew today's game would be a battle of defenses," commented head coach
Priscilla Morgan after the win. "I'm very proud of our defensive effort in the front line and back row. Out-digging and out-blocking (John Brown) was a decisive factor in the win."
Â
TXWES is now 11-11 all-time against the Golden Eagles, with the last four contests going in favor of the Lady Rams. With the win, the Rams share the second spot in conference standings with Oklahoma City.
Â
The Texas Wesleyan ranks 10th in the nation (1st in SAC) hitting .261, while JBU ranks second in the conference at .240.
Â
Morgan went on to praise individual standout performances, "Tierra a great offensive day on top of her defensive output, Shelby has been in the zone lately and gave another consistent performance today, Kayla has also stepped up her serving and defensive efforts, and Sasha once again showed her versatility and gives us balance in all aspects of the game."
Â
Shelby Stinnett grabbed 10 kills and 14 digs in a double-double performance.
Dana Lohrke had eight kills in the win and is hitting .413 over her last five contests. After a season high 16 assists last night,
Hannah Altman posted a double-double with 10 assists and 10 digs.
Shaylee Griffin had a break-out game, matching her career high with eight kills.
Â
Sasha Robinson dropped 30 assists, 12 digs, six kills, and five block assists in the effort, and says the mindset as a team has contributed to the success so far this season, "We are extremely focused on our goals, and we go into practice and games day dedicated to each other and dedicated to giving the perfect effort. Since beginning of the season we have keyed in on earning around 18 points per set, and limiting errors to seven per set. Having goals like that helps improve our game a lot." Â
Â
Shelby Stinnett lit up the floor with 10 kills and four aces, adding 14 digs on the day.
Tierra Coverson tallied 10 kills and was responsible for five (1 solo, 8 assists) of the 13 total team blocks.
Kayla Hayes tacked on a season high 17 digs for the Rams.
Â
"I've been proud of our balance attacking and focusing on the small things," concluded Morgan. "These are team wins and our bench is amazing to keep our "One Team" focus. It has been fun to teach these ladies that champions take focus and control in the little things to accomplish great things. Our winning is just a by-product of what we practice and teach."
Â
The Lady Rams will look to continue their streak when they host SAC newcomer Central Christian College on Friday, October 6. The match is set for a 7:00 p.m. start at the Sid Richardson Center.
