LSU-Shreveport gets revenge on Rams

Box Score SHREVEPORT, LA - Julian Torres hit 8-of-10 shots for No. 11 Texas Wesleyan Men's Basketball (5-3) but the Rams dug too big of a hole in a 83-67 loss on the road at No. 7 LSU-Shreveport (4-4) Wednesday afternoon.

Shreveport got its revenge after the Rams topped the Pilots in Fort Worth to tip-off the season, 67-65 on November 1. In that game, Torres was 7-for-10 in 19 minutes scoring 15 points, but fouled out. It was a similar story Wednesday with Torres picking up five fouls in 18 minutes of action. Torres was called for his fifth foul with 3:51 to play, previously scoring seven-straight points as Texas Wesleyan attempted to mount a comeback. Torres was called for three personal fouls in the first 3:15 of the second half.

The Rams defense forced 22 Pilot turnovers which it turned into a 24-13 advantage in points off turnovers with a +9 turnover differential. The free throws piled up for Shreveport, however, getting 28 looks (making 21) and the difference in giveaways was made up by Shreveport's +7 edge on the offensive glass. These two teams are familiar with physicality - and being called harshly - playing a large chunk of game on the foul line. Earlier this season, the two teams combined for 54 free throws and 34 fouls. Last season in Fort Worth, the Rams and Pilots were whistled for an astounding 54 fouls resulting in 65 free throws, 41 of which went to LSUS.

Juwan Jones was the most aggressive of any guard Wednesday, attacking the basket to earn a handful of trips to the foul line, hitting 6-of-10 free throws - part of a 17-point outing. Sam Lorenzen scored 13 points. Justin Flakes chipped in seven off the bench.

Flakes' bucket with 8:48 to go in the first half ,making the score 24-19 Shreveport, had the Rams in a good spot but Texas Wesleyan got stuck on 28 after Jones' three with 3:55 to play in period one trimmed the deficit to seven. LSU-Shreveport went on a 15-1 run to open the game up hitting three of the Pilots 10 shots from downtown during the 2:40 stretch.

UPCOMING POLL
The next Coaches' Top 25 poll will be released by the NAIA Tuesday December 4. It's there that Texas Wesleyan could receive a slight boost in the polls after playing the No. 2 team in the country, the No. 7 team twice and Wiley, who received votes. While the Rams completed that stretch 1-3, Wiley has raced out to a 5-1 start and LSU-Alexandria was just knocked from the unbeaten ranks after falling by one point to Dillard, who was tied at No. 11 with Texas Wesleyan in the original poll. The Rams have easily taken care of all their unranked opponents.

WHAT'S NEXT
Texas Wesleyan starts SAC play at home Thursday November 29 against Bacone at 8 p.m. Bacone is 1-4 on the season, losing to John Brown in the conference opener 99-76.
