No. 23 Rams Shutout Warriors in SAC Opener

FORT WORTH, TX: The 23rd ranked Texas Wesleyan University baseball team (6-2, 1-0) picked up a 3-0 shutout win over Bacone College (2-7, 0-1 SAC) at Sycamore Park on Saturday.

The rain gave way to partly sunny skies and cool breezes today at the ballpark, just in time for the conference opener with the Warriors.

The Rams broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth after Kiki Menedez launched a fast ball over the left field fence. Jacob Barfield hit a single into shallow center before he stole second to put a runner in scoring position with none away. Cory Gallegos advanced the runner on a ground out to second before Ryan Breaud roped one into right center to give TXWES a 2-0 lead.

Gallegos added one run in the eighth, but it could have, and maybe should have been, two runs. Gallegos crushed a no-doubter over the left-center wall, rounded the bases and went into the dugout. The score was 4-0 until Bacone appealed. Dalton Martin must have noticed something, because he received the ball and tapped home plate with the toe of his cleat, prompting an out call by the home plate umpire. Gallegos was called out for not touching the plate on his home run, making it 3-0, and taking a home run away from the senior from Corpus Christi, TX.

The Texas Wesleyan pitchers were dominating the Warrior batters, so the three run lead was secure from any comebacks, despite the lost run.

Steven Yancey (3-0) pitched seven strong innings in the win. The senior allowed no runs on just three hits, gave up three walks, and sat down seven batters.

Alex Davis notched his second save of the season in two innings of spotless relief work. Davis allowed just one hit, one walk, while striking out three.

Breaud went 2 for 3 with one RBI. Jacob Barfield went 2 for 4 with a stolen base and a run scored. Menendez went 1 for 4 with the go-ahead home run. Gallegos was 2 for 4 with a triple and a RBI.

These two teams will meet again tomorrow, Sunday, February 18 in a double header starting at noon at Sycamore Park.
