SILOAM SPRINGS, AR: The Texas Wesleyan University women's basketball team (7-19, 5-13 SAC) nearly pulled off a comeback in a 72-70 loss to John Brown University (17-10, 11-7 SAC) at Bill George Arena on Saturday.
Â
Texas Wesleyan outscored its opponent in the second half 43-35, but the Golden Eagles went lights out from the floor and took advantage of an inefficient TXWES second quarter. John Brown took a 37-27 advantage at halftime after a very slim, nine point second quarter by the Lady Rams. TXWES had opportunities in this one, but struggled slightly from behind the arc, going 9 of 25 (36 percent). JBU shot 48 percent from the downtown and 47 percent from the floor in the win.
Â
The Lady Rams came on strong in the fourth quarter, and
Falesha Fuller drained a three-pointer with 21 seconds remaining to cut the Golden Eagle lead to just two points at 68-66. TXWES fouled Taylor Fergen with six second to go, and she made both to put JBU up by four, before fouling
Lexi Burns on a three attempt.
Â
Burns missed the first, but got the next two to fall to make it 70-68. Cameron Bailey secured the inbound pass and was immediately fouled. Bailey put both free throws in to make the Golden Eagles a perfect 11 of 11 from the free throw line.
Karah Sicurella tried to draw the foul on a layup at the buzzer, but no call was made as TXWES falls just short, now riding an eight-game losing skid.
Â
Fuller posted 20 points, going 8 for 14 from the field.
Evie Whorley had 12 points and six rebounds. Sicurella tacked on 10 points, four boards, and three helpers in the loss.
Â
The Lady Rams will celebrate Senior Day on Thursday, February 22 against SAC newcomer, Central Christian College. Tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m. at the Sid Richardson Center.
