No. 6 Flying Queens Power Past Lady Rams, 94-66

FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University women's basketball team (7-15, 5-8 SAC) dropped a 94-66 contest to No. 6 Wayland Baptist University at the Sid Richardson Center on Saturday.
 
Wayland Baptist overpowered the Rams shooting 49 percent from the floor and 14-35 from beyond the arc. WBU also led TXWES 31-13 in assists. The Lady Rams shot 34 percent from the floor. The home team recovered, after shooting 19 percent from the free throw line against OPSU just two days ago, going 19-23 (83 percent) today.
 
"Wayland is the one of the best teams in the country and has a good of a chance as anybody to win a national championship," commented head coach Steve Trachier after the game, "and I think our team saw that we can play at that level. The score got a little out of hand at the end, but were within striking distance late in the third quarter.
 
The Lady Rams shaved 12 points off the WBU lead, outscoring the away team 23-16 third quarter. Wayland Baptist led 58-39 before the Lady Rams took over the game. Evie Whorley started the run with a triple and added a pair of layups, running right through the Flying Queen defense. Tomi Sanchez contributed four more points to make it a 58-51 game with 3:44 left in the quarter. WBU recovered though, and took an 11-point lead in to the final frame.
 
Trachier stressed the importance of putting this game in the rear view, "We have to put this game behind us, go back to work on Monday, and start preparing for the next game."
 
Evie Whorley lit up the scoreboard for a season high 25 points. She added nine boards fin the effort. Tomi Sanchez and Karah Sicurella each finished with 13 points.
 
The Flying Queens have now won eight straight, as WBU makes its case for a regular season championship. The Flying Queens sit in the third spot in the standings, a half game back from Oklahoma City and USAO. Maci Merket earned a triple-double with 14 points, 14 rebounds, and 10 assists in a hallmark night.
 
TXWES will travel to Bethany, OK for a match-up with Southwestern Christian University on Saturday, February 10. Tip-off is set for 3:00 p.m.
