Lady Rams Rock SAGU In Doubleheader Sweep

FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University softball team (18-8, 6-0 SAC) tacked on a pair of conference wins against SAGU (17-11-1, 6-4 SAC) at Sycamore Park on Wednesday. The Lady Rams bounced to a 9-3 win in game one before taking game two 5-2.

Lauren Wernet (7-4) was the top standout today, as the senior went 6 for 7 with three RBI, including four doubles in the double header. She notched career-high three doubles in game one, tying the school record.

Wernet also got the game one win on the mound. She threw all seven innings, allowing three runs (two earned), on seven hits, walking one, and fanning five SAGU batters.

Jenna Rhoades also had a whale of doubleheader, going 7 for 8 with one RBI and four runs scored.

The Lady Rams established a healthy lead to start game one, putting up crooked numbers in the first and third innings and taking a 6-0 margin. Taylor Sutton singled home two runs in a three hit first inning. Sutton added another run in the third inning on a sacrifice fly to center, before Wernet doubled home two more in the next at bat. Wernet would later find home plate on a SAGU error to cap the drive.

The Lions got on the board in the fifth, and then added two more on the sixth, but it would not be enough to challenge the home team. TXWES posted two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth on a Bailey Terry sharply hit single through the left side and the Lady Rams would go on to take the game, 9-3.

Makenna Aycock (5-2) kept the Lions off-balance in the game two. She displayed some wicked movement in her arsenal, allowing two runs on just four hits. She allowed two walks and struck out five in the win.

Offensively, the Lady Rams matched their game one total of 12 hits, while five players earned a multi-hit game. Rhoades stayed red hot, going 3 for 4 with a RBI. Corrina Palomino led the team with two runs batted in, going 2 for 3 in the win.

TXWES did most of the damage in the second inning, taking four runs on five hits. Palomino, Rhoades, and Terry each plated runs, while the extra run crossed on an error.

SAGU cut the lead in half in the fourth, capped by a Kristin Stringer home run to left field, but the Lady Rams came back in the fifth with a Palomino rocket up the middle to make a 5-2 lead on the way to the win.

TXWES goes to Oklahoma City, OK for a meeting with the seventh ranked OCU Stars on Friday, March 23. That double header scheduled for a 5:00 p.m. start.
