Dallas Takes Doubleheader From Rams

FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University baseball team (11-4) dropped a pair of non-conference games to the University of Dallas (5-7) at Sycamore Park on Saturday. The Crusaders posted two come from behind wins, taking a 5-4 game one before boxing out the Rams in game two by a score of 4-2.

The Crusaders outlasted the Rams in a wild game one that included six total errors. Texas Wesleyan also left nine runners on base in the loss.

The Crusaders held a 2-1 edge through four and a half before the Rams quickly responded with a three run fifth. Ted Wisdom and Menedez reached on back-to-back misplayed grounders by Dallas. That led to a Michael Davila ground out RBI and a two run single to left from Cory Gallegos to make it a 4-3 advantage for the home team.

Not to be outdone, the Crusaders did the same in the sixth with a three run, three hit inning. The rally put Dallas up by one, which would be the eventual final.

Stephen Yancey (4-1) suffered the loss, as the senior was bitten by the error bug. He went six innings, allowing just four hits on two earned runs, although he was marked for five. He allowed just one walk, while striking out nine.

Game two proved to be cleaner, at least in terms of errors allowing runs, as Brad Sugg navigated the Rams through five scoreless innings. Sugg allowed a run in the sixth, but left the game with a 2-1 lead in tact heading in the seventh.

The seventh is where things went a little haywire for the home team. Luke Boylson was hit by pitch, and Joe Vondrachek relieved the Dallas left fielder to pinch run, stealing second in a critical moment of the ball game. That led to a sacrifice bunt by Seth Hanson who reached on a throwing error that allowed the tying run to score, but more importantly, allowed the go-ahead run to advance to third with no outs in the inning. Alex Davis got a strikeout in the next at bat, but Jordan Stickler got the go-ahead run home with a nicely placed sacrifice bunt. The Rams got the second out of the inning before Nathan Patton was able to add an insurance run on a single through the left side to make it a 4-2 game and put the Rams on the ropes.

Mark Schreiner led off the bottom of the seventh with a single to shallow right field. He later made his way to third, but Dallas was able to shut the door to earn the win.

Dallas was able to set themselves up to score more often than not in game two, stealing five bases, despite stranding six.

Davis (2-1) suffered the game two loss. He threw one inning in relief, allowing just one hit, but hit a batter and walked another. The senior gave up three runs (one earned), while sitting down two.

Jacob Barfield went 3 for 6 on the day, Davila went 2 for 8 with a pair of RBI. Schreiner went 2 for 3 with a RBI in game two.

The Rams will shake off the two strange games behind them and prepare for the series finale with the Crusaders tomorrow, Sunday March 4 starting at 1:00 p.m. at Sycamore Park
