Lady Rams Split At MACU

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK: The Texas Wesleyan University softball team (34-14, 18-6 SAC) split a doubleheader with Mid-America Christian University (29-13, 12-10 SAC) at Jack Allen Field on Thursday. The Evangels took game one, 8-2 before the Lady Rams held off MACU in game two, 6-4.

The Lady Rams, who are third in the conference standings, were outhit 22-13 on the day as the upset minded Evangels, who rank fourth in the conference standings, were poised to defend home turf. Bailey Terry went 4 for 7 with a solo home run in the doubleheader. Kayla Prachyl went 3 for 5 with a triple.

In game one, the Evangels caught fire in the second inning, rattling off a two-out, seven run rally to stun the Lady Rams, forcing the team into an uphill battle.

Terry got TXWES on the board in the fourth inning after sending a shot over the left field fence, her 14th of the season.

The Lady Rams added another score in the fifth inning. Makenna Aycock singled to the pitcher and stole second before Saeya Esparza reached on an error to make it a first and third situation. Head coach Shannon Gower gave the double steal sign and Aycock and Esparza executed the play successfully to make a 7-2 game.

MACU added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth, but it was not needed as the Lady Rams were limited to four hits in the 8-2 loss.

Aycock (12-4) suffered the loss. She worked 1.2 innings and allowed seven runs on seven hits, walked two, and struck out one. Sidney Stewart was stalwart in 4.1 innings of relief work. She allowed a run on five hits, walked one, and sat down three.

The Evangels found another lead in the game two, grabbing run on a sacrifice fly in the second inning. The Lady Rams could not let that lead stand though, taking three in the third, sparked by a Prachyl lead-off triple to deep center field. She scored on a throwing error on the play to tie the game. Hailey Hollingsworth plated another run on a fielder's choice play before Aycock capped the drive with a RBI base hit into left field to make it a 3-1 game in favor of TXWES.

The two teams went one for one the rest of the way. MACU took a run in each of the third, fifth, and seventh, while Texas Wesleyan took a run in the fourth, sixth and seventh.

Hollingsworth was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the fourth before the Lady Rams were given two more due to errors in the sixth and seventh.

The Evangels made it a 6-4 game before loading the bases in the bottom of the seventh, but Aycock closed out the side to earn her third save of the season.

Lauren Wernet (11-6) earned the win. She went six innings, allowing four run (one earned) on nine hits, had no walks, and had one strikeout.

The Lady Rams will head to Chickasha, OK for a doubleheader with No. 3 Science and Arts. First pitch is set for 11:00 a.m.
