Lady Rams Set Multiple Records In Historic Senior Day

FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University softball team (40-16, 24-8 SAC) notched a series sweep of Central Christian College (14-40, 7-25 SAC) on Senior Day with a pair of wins at Sycamore Park on Saturday, breaking the school record for most wins in a single season. Lauren Wernet pitched a no-hitter in an 8-0 game one win before the Lady Rams rallied for seven runs in the fifth inning of game two for a 10-2 win.

The Lady Rams honored seniors Demi Dotson, Lauren Wernet, Kayla Prachyl, Corrina Palomino, Samantha Bastien, Tawnye Bramlett, and sophomore Sidney Stewart, who all played in the final home game of their careers. The lone sophomore, Stewart, is transferring to UT-Arlington to pursue a nursing degree.

Lauren Wernet (12-6) tossed a no-hitter in game one. Walked the first batter of the game before retiring 15 straight Tiger batters. Five innings no runs, no hits, one walk, three strikeouts.

"It was so special to have my family and friends there," said Wernet on getting the no-hitter on Senior Day. "It's not every day they all get to come watch me play the game I love." The senior from West, TX made a point to give credit to her defense for assisting in the milestone, "My girls have my back. I never doubted them for a second. They're the reason for today. I couldn't have done it without them backing me up, because no one is perfect."

Kayla Prachyl broke the career stolen base record in game one. Prachyl led off the first inning with a single through the right side, and promptly stole second to break the school career steals record. Prachyl finished the day with 86 career steals. The previous record was held by Brandi Williams (1997-2000) with 84.

"It's awesome to know my name could be in the record books for years to come," commented Prachyl on the accomplishment. "Honestly, I'm always trying to get myself into scoring position to open up the short game for Jenna, and then score on BT's hits, because I know she's been close to breaking records herself. Having the stolen bases record is incredible, but it's the team effort records like BT's RBI's, and total wins that I'm most excited about."

The senior from Ennis went on to talk about what contributes to her consistency in stealing bases, "I honestly think it's knowing how consistent every bat in our lineup is. I know, especially leading off an inning, if I can get myself in scoring position with no outs, the chances of us scoring and getting that first run and momentum is a lot higher."

Bailey Terry set the career RBI record, one day after breaking the single season RBI record. In her first at bat of the day, the junior third basemen turned on one, sending a frozen rope over the left-center fence for a two-run home run to capture the record. The junior currently has 147 career RBI. The previous record was 145, held by Rachel Hampton (2004-2007).

With the game two win, Shannon Gower broke the single season win record with 40. The previous record was set in 1999 with the Lady Rams went 39-16-1 on the way to a Heart of Texas Championship.

In the four game series, the Lady Rams outscored Central Christian 39-4 in just 20 innings. The team is now 4-0 all-time against the Tigers. All four wins came via the run-rule.

In game one, the Lady Rams did all their damage in the first three innings offensively. TXWES held a 4-0 lead before letting out a four-run burst in the third inning. Demi Dotson fired one through the left side to score a pair before two more crossed via Tiger errors. Wernet and the defense did the rest to post the run-rule win.

In game two, the Tigers established a slight 1-0 lead in third, but TXWES grabbed three in the bottom of the inning. Central Christian cut the lead to one in the fourth, but once again Texas Wesleyan responded big.  Bonifacio drove in a pair on a base hit before Dotson ended the game with a bases clearing, two-run triple to deep right field.

Stewart (9-5) earned the win. She tossed five innings, allowing two runs (one earned), on nine hits. Stewart walked one and struck out one in the win.

Dotson was 2 for 5 with four RBI and two stolen bases on the day. Bonifacio went 3 for 4 with three RBI in the two games.

The Lady Rams sit in third in the conference standings and will await seeding announcement from the conference.  The round robin format of the tournament will start on Thursday, May 3 in Oklahoma City, OK.
