WAXAHACHIE, Texas - Sluggish ends to sets helped Southwestern Assemblies of God University (15-1, 7-0 SAC) top the Texas Wesleyan Lady Rams (8-6, 5-2 SAC) Tuesday night (25-15, 25-19, 25-20) to remain unbeaten in Sooner Athletic Conference play.
Things were going strong early, tied at 14 in the first set off of
Tierra Coverson's kill. But the Lady Lions (15-1, 7-0) finished on an 11-1 run to clear the board - hitting .333 (14 kills, 3 errors) in their first 25 points.
In Set 2, SAGU found a similar path to victory. In a 13-13 tie, SAGU scored 12 of the next 18 points, including three timely kills from Suzanny Figueiredo, who had 11 on the night.
Four straight attacking errors after the Rams took an early 4-3 advantage in the third set put the Lady Rams behind the eight ball, surrendering three-straight points. While the Lady Lions never managed to lead by more than five, Texas Wesleyan was never able to recover, making the sweep official.
Sasha Robinson saw her most playing time since her return, with 23 total attacks - second most on the team only behind
Jasmine Creek, who led the Rams offense with seven kills. The Lady Rams hit .103, the team's lowest hitting percentage since the team began to gel at the end of August.
Lohrke contributed six kills, Robinson five.
Brenda Pargas led the team with 14 assists, while
Jasmine Creek did it a little bit of everything, supplying the defense with 13 digs (
Brianna Sitton had 12). While the Texas Wesleyan defense cooled off the Lion offense throughout the match (SAGU's hitting percentage dropped to .178 from .333), it wasn't enough for the Lady Rams on the road in a hostile environment.
