TXWES Wrestling debuts in Fort Worth with wins

FORT WORTH, TX - Texas Wesleyan Wrestling made a huge first impression at the Sid Richardson Center Saturday as the men beat both Schreiner 34-15 and Wayland Baptist 31-9 - the first two victories of the season after losing the season opener in Oklahoma City on Halloween. The women played their first contests of the season, dropping the first matchup with Wayland Baptist 29-14, but bounced back with their first victory of the inaugural season against Schreiner 24-14.

"It felt pretty good," said Ashley Molina, 191, who won both of her matches on the day. "It's a pretty good accomplishment to be the first team in the first home dual to get the first win. It's complete dedication and effort."

Molina, along with Clarissa Archuleta, 130, took both their opponents down - Archuleta by fall and forfeit and Molina by a quick win 37 seconds in and a close 5-2 decision. Alexandra Magana, 116; Alexis Saldivar, 123; Zammariea Brandon, 155 and Karestin Andrews, 170, all earned triumphs in the dual. Andrews' victory was particularly nerve-racking - a 23-19 decision - in a high scoring affair.

On the men's side, six different wrestlers earned sweeps of their opponents. Of the six, Zane Miller, 285, earned the quickest fall - 53 seconds - along with a 5-2 decision. Enis Ida, 141, won by a single point - 8-7 - before earning a fall against Schreiner competitor Bobby Espinoza in the nightcap.

"It's exciting making history, being the first ever 184-pounder from Texas Wesleyan - it's like the start of a legacy, starting off strong too," said Ja'Marcus Thomas, who won by fall and 10-6 during the dual. "Everyone here I know, basically. All the people from school came to watch, my parents from home, other teammates parents. It's Texas Wesleyan Wrestling and it's a good team."

Richland College comes to town to take on the Rams and Lady Rams next week.

New to Wrestling?  Here are some helpful terms identified.

Dual Meet Team Scoring
Fall (or pin), Forfeit, Default, Disqualification - 6 team points
Technical Fall (getting ahead of your opponent by 15 points; ends the match) - 5 team points
Major Decision (winning the match by 8 - 14 points) - 4 team points
Decision (winning the match by fewer than 8 points) - 3 team points

There are five ways to score points in a wrestling match:
1 – Takedown - (2 points) You score two points for taking your opponent down to the mat and controlling him/her.
2 – Escape - (1 point) You score one point for getting away or getting to a neutral position when your opponent has you down on the mat.
3 – Reversal - (2 points) You score two points when your opponent has you down on the mat and you come from underneath and gain control of your opponent.
4 – Near Fall (Back Points) - (2 or 3 points) You get near fall points when you almost but not quite get your opponent pinned. A near fall (near pin) is when...
  • both shoulders are held for two seconds within four inches of the mat, or...
  • one shoulder touches the mat and the other shoulder is at a 45 degree angle coming down to the mat, or...
  • the wrestler is held in a high bridge or back on both elbows.
If a near fall lasts for two seconds, you get 2 points. If a near fall lasts for 5 seconds, you get 3 points.
5 – Penalty Points - (1 or 2 points) a player is awarded points if other player commits various infractions such as: illegal holds, technical violations, unnecessary roughness, unsportsmanlike conduct, flagrant misconduct, stalling, and incorrect starting position of false start.
