TXWES faces Oklahoma City; Archuleta, Magana get wins

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK - Texas Wesleyan Women's Wresting faced off against Oklahoma City in a dual Wednesday night at Abe Lemons Arena, falling 41-7 but getting a couple of victories along the way.

Alexandra Magana represented the 116-pound weight class and knocked around OCU's Lauren Calderon to the tune of a 14-4 victory by technical fall, scoring seven, two-point takedowns along the way. Clarissa Archuleta (130) had four takedowns in a 8-2 victory over Mattison Parker, which helped the Lady Rams get within five points of the Stars, 12-7.

Unfortunately, TXWES couldn't cobble together more victories. Oklahoma City got a couple of pins, a tech fall and a couple of forfeits to round out the night.

The Lady Rams in their first season as a program continue to notch victories, big and small in their first season. The Oklahoma City Stars, who finished second out of 20 at the NAIA Invitational last season, won four NAIA National Championships in four-straight seasons, from 2009-2012. Texas Wesleyan will take some lumps along the way, but continued individual victories and efforts are positive signs for a bright future.

Major Decision (winning the match by 8 - 14 points) - 4 team points
Decision (winning the match by fewer than 8 points) - 3 team points

There are five ways to score points in a wrestling match:
1 – Takedown - (2 points) You score two points for taking your opponent down to the mat and controlling him/her.

  • the wrestler is held in a high bridge or back on both elbows.
If a near fall lasts for two seconds, you get 2 points. If a near fall lasts for 5 seconds, you get 3 points.
5 – Penalty Points - (1 or 2 points) a player is awarded points if other player commits various infractions such as: illegal holds, technical violations, unnecessary roughness, unsportsmanlike conduct, flagrant misconduct, stalling, and incorrect starting position of false start.
