WICHITA — Samantha Barragan captured the 138-pound title with a 35-2 season record, highlighting Texas Wesleyan's performance at the KCAC/Sooner Athletic Conference Women's Wrestling Championships, where the Rams scored 143.5 team points on Friday.
The event, hosted by Friends University, saw Ottawa University and Wayland Baptist University tie for the team championship with 176.5 points each. Texas Wesleyan placed third with 151.5 points, while Oklahoma City finished with 139 points and the University of Saint Mary took fifth.
The Rams had nine wrestlers score points across multiple weight classes. Barragan earned 24.5 team points with her first-place finish, pinning her opponent in the quarterfinal, winning by tech fall in the semifinal, and securing the title by decision.
Elizabeth Duvall placed second at 136 pounds (18-8 record, 17.5 points), falling in the championship match after a tech fall win in the quarterfinal and a fall in the semifinal.
Carla Campos took second at 207 pounds (28-6, 18.5 points), with a fall in the quarterfinal, tech fall in the semifinal, and decision in the third-place match before losing the second-place match.
Vanessa De La Cruz finished second at 124 pounds (10-10, 18.0 points), winning by fall in the quarterfinal and semifinal before a no contest in the second-place match.
Gracie Elliott claimed third at 110 pounds (15-5, 17.0 points), pinning her quarterfinal and consolation semifinal opponents, winning the third-place match by tech fall, and losing the second-place match by no contest.
Carolina Rios placed third at 117 pounds (9-5, 16.5 points), winning by fall in the quarterfinal and consolation semifinal, taking the third-place match by decision, and losing the second-place match by no contest.
Pella LeFever was fourth at 145 pounds (4-6, 14.0 points), with a fall in the quarterfinal and tech fall in the third-place match.
Faith Vondy finished fifth at 131 pounds (5-10, 9.0 points), receiving a bye in the consolation semifinal and winning the fifth-place match by fall.
Melissa McCue placed seventh at 117 pounds (3-3, 7.0 points), winning her championship round 1 match by decision and the seventh-place match by decision.
Violet De La Cruz placed fifth at 124 pounds (7-14, 1.5 points), winning by decision in the quarterfinal but losing the second-place match by no contest.
Nataleigh Zapata (2-11) did not score at 103 pounds.
The championships serve as a qualifier for the NAIA national tournament in March.
