Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Cameron Irvine

Burns, Davis leads Senior charge in triumph

FORT WORTH - Led by their seniors, Texas Wesleyan Women's Basketball (14-16, 12-10 SAC)  ended the regular season on a high note with a 66-56 win over Oklahoma Panhandle State (14-14, 10-12 SAC), earning the Rams a season sweep after winning the first meeting earlier in the year, 54-42.

The game was in hand long before the final score after Texas Wesleyan went on another stellar defensive run. Earlier this season at home against Southwestern Christian, the Rams went on a 20-0 run to expand a two point lead into a 22-point rout. Southwestern Christian went 0-for-9 from the floor with nine turnovers and was blanked for a whole quarter, stretching from the third and into the fourth. Those moments are once in a blue moon, but it happened again against the Aggies.

With 3:22 to go in the first half, Oklahoma Panhandle State took a 29-20 deficit and cut it down to one, getting the deficit to 30-29. It was then that OPSU turned to ice. Five turnovers and eight missed shots later, the Rams led 49-29 - a 19-0 run over an 8:07 timeframe.

The Rams kept their foot on the gas until Karah Sicurella drained a three with 2:18 left in the third to put her and her teammates up 56-31. The Lady Rams made all four free throws down the stretch to ensure the win.

SENIORS: THE FAST START
Lexi Burns hit three 3s in the first three minutes and finished with 19 points. The Aggies made sure they had a woman on her the rest of the game, but Burns managed to still produce.

SENIORS: TYING A CAREER HIGH
Adrianna Davis almost turned in her finest performance as a Ram with 12 points with three rebounds on an efficient 5-of-7 shooting.

SENIORS: A SMALL MENACE
Lorian Benjamin provided energy all day to the tune of 27 minutes, six points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals - including two offensive rebounds to keep drives alive in the first quarter, where Texas Wesleyan had their most offensive success (22 points). The Rams improved their first quarter scoring as the season went along, but throughout the season consistently got more efficient the more they play, scoring 458 points in the first, 488 in the second, 493 in the third and 509 points in fourth quarters in the 2018-2019 run.

SENIORS: THE AGGIE KILLER
In her first three games as a Ram, Sicurella scored at least 10 points against OPSU, accounting for three of her 15 career games in double figures. While she fell short of that Saturday (six points) she still provided plenty of value, assisting on four made baskets (led team), with three rebounds and two steals.

SENIORS: THE WARRIORS
Tomi Sanchez and Bailey Broadnax - still recovering from injuries from earlier this season and last season - turned in 23 minutes total. Sanchez hauled in five rebounds, the most for any Ram in the game that saw 20 minutes or less of action.

Outside the seniors, Chrystal Ngawuchu was a major part of the Lady Rams' offensive success, pouring in 14 points. Nicole Gleason had seven points and led the team with seven rebounds. The Rams scored 22 points off of 20 OPSU turnovers, nine of which came in the first quarter to help TXWES assert dominance.

WHAT'S NEXT
The Lady Rams are slotted as the No. 7 seed in the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament bracket. After Wayland Baptist was upset by Southwest Assemblies of God Saturday, the Flying Queens fall to the Rams as the No. 2 seed in the bracket, while Oklahoma City ascends to the top spot. Texas Wesleyan saw Wayland Thursday, when TXWES nearly pulled the upset in a 73-64 loss. The Quarterfinal will be played in Plainview on Tuesday at 6 p.m. If Texas Wesleyan wins, they'll go to the semifinals in Oklahoma City March 1-2.
