ARLINGTON, Texas – The Texas Wesleyan Men's and Women's Tennis teams dominated NCAA DIII Howard Payne, 6-0 and 5-0 respectively, in the season opener at Arlington Tennis Center on Saturday.
"Despite missing quite a few players on the men's and women's teams, it was really great to see the depth that we have on our team this year," commented head coach
Angel Martinez.
New Lady Ram Kara Antonio topped Brittany Sutton 6-0 and 6-0 to set the pace for the rest of the team.
Returners
Mae Covacevich took her match with Zayhe Sanchez, 6-1 and 6-1, while
Caitlin Souvannavong did the same against Jessinia Ureste.
All three Lady Rams double matches went 6-0.
On the Men's side,
Linus Richter was surgical in win over Gabe Benitez. Richter also teamed up with new Ram Andres Gonzalez to breeze 6-1 in their doubles match against Benitez and Dominic Denardo.
New additions Juan Felipe Parra and Ian Carvajal posted singles wins, and returner
Adam White, who took a 6-0, 6-4 singles win over Hunter Green. He also teamed up with Parra to take a 6-0 doubles win over Ben Blanchard and Denardo.
"We know it's early in the year, and coach [Steve] Foster and I saw great things," continued Martinez. "We also saw some things in our doubles matches that we need to tighten up. Overall, we are so pleased with the teams and how they are coming together."
The Rams will have their eyes set on making some noise at the Oklahoma City Tournament on September 13-14. Opponents are TBD.
