WRESTLING: Men win two, women drop one

BATESVILLE, AR - Texas Wesleyan Wresting had a busy Tuesday, traveling to Arkansas to take part in a tri-match with Lyon College and Ouachita Baptist. The Rams took out both Lyon (33-24) and Ouachita (27-23), while the Lady Rams fell to Lyon, 30-11. Ouachita Baptist competes in Division II, but do not have a women's team.

Kobe Nelms (133 lbs), Don Doyle Jr. (165 lbs) and Dracius McKee (174-lbs) took home a pair of victories, headlined by McKee's wins by fall (2:22 against Lyon) and by major decision over OBU, 12-1. Juan Castellanos (125 lbs) had a easy night, skating through with a pair of forfeits. Zane Miller (197 lbs) topped Lyon's John Bentley in 41 seconds.

On the women's side, victories were scooped up by Alexandra Magana (116 lbs) on a 10-0 tech fall and Madison Brown (101 lbs) nabbed a forfeit win. It was the first time the Lady Rams got a chance to hit the mat against an opponent as a team since their bout with Wayland Baptist December 7.

Both teams take a trip back to Plainview to battle Wayland Baptist Saturday January 25.

New to Wrestling?  Here are some helpful terms identified.

Dual Meet Team Scoring
Fall (or pin), Forfeit, Default, Disqualification - 6 team points
Technical Fall (getting ahead of your opponent by 15 points; ends the match) - 5 team points
Major Decision (winning the match by 8 - 14 points) - 4 team points
Decision (winning the match by fewer than 8 points) - 3 team points

There are five ways to score points in a wrestling match:
1 – Takedown - (2 points) You score two points for taking your opponent down to the mat and controlling him/her.
2 – Escape - (1 point) You score one point for getting away or getting to a neutral position when your opponent has you down on the mat.
3 – Reversal - (2 points) You score two points when your opponent has you down on the mat and you come from underneath and gain control of your opponent.
4 – Near Fall (Back Points) - (2 or 3 points) You get near fall points when you almost but not quite get your opponent pinned. A near fall (near pin) is when...
  • both shoulders are held for two seconds within four inches of the mat, or...
  • one shoulder touches the mat and the other shoulder is at a 45 degree angle coming down to the mat, or...
  • the wrestler is held in a high bridge or back on both elbows.
If a near fall lasts for two seconds, you get 2 points. If a near fall lasts for 5 seconds, you get 3 points.
5 – Penalty Points - (1 or 2 points) a player is awarded points if other player commits various infractions such as: illegal holds, technical violations, unnecessary roughness, unsportsmanlike conduct, flagrant misconduct, stalling, and incorrect starting position of false start.
