No. 24 Texas Wesleyan Men's Basketball (21-8) secured the No. 3 seed in the Sooner Athletic Conference tournament thanks to back-to-back victories at home over ranked opponents John Brown and Southwestern Assemblies of God. That grants a home game for Texas Wesleyan Tuesday at 7 p.m. against University of Science and Arts-Oklahoma. Here's what you need to know heading into the SAC quarterfinal:
The Matchups
The Rams won both their matchups this season with the Drovers but both were close - a 77-74 triumph on the road and a 105-97 shootout 'W' at home. In both games, USAO took the lead into the half but surrendered a combined 105 second-half points in losses. One of the best deep shooters in the nation, USAO was held under its average of 10.6 three-pointers made per game both games, hitting a combined 15-for-57 from beyond the arc.
The Key Players
Peyton Sallee found the most success against the Drovers of any Ram on offense, scoring a combined 39 points, hitting seven threes with 11 rebounds.
Joe Cook-Green supplied double digits off the bench twice, two of his nine games with at least 10 points in SAC play. Dylan Causwell is the X-Factor for USAO, pouring 21 and 30 points in two meetings to lead the charge for the visitors from Chickasha. It's worth noting Stephon Hall, USAO's second leading scorer, can go through slumps - four times shooting less than 20 percent against SAC competition, once against the Rams in the first battle.
The Edge
TXWES' defense gives USAO all sorts of problems, forcing 44 turnovers in the two contests earlier this season - 25 turnovers in the first meeting. That is the most giveaways in a game for the Drovers since December 16, 2017. If the Rams can bring the defensive intensity like fans saw at the start of conference season against Wayland Baptist, or on Senior Night against John Brown, it will be the difference maker.
