About the Rams:
The Rams (0-2, 0-1 SAC) are looking for their first win of the year after falling in their only two games of the young season.
As a team TXWES ranks in the NAIA top 25 in six categories: No. 16 Total Rebounds per Game (46.0), No. 18 Defensive Rebounds per Game (30.5), No. 21 Total Rebound Margin (8.5), No. 21 Field Goal Pct Defense (35.1), No. 22 Offensive Rebounds per Game (15.5), and No. 24 3-Pt Fg Pct Defense (25.4).
TXWES is first in the SAC in field goal percentage defense and defensive rebounds.
On the NAIA individual leaderboard, Evie Whorley ranks No. 2 in Defensive Rebounds per Game (13.0), and No. 3 in Total Rebounds per Game (15.0). Whorley is also the SAC's leading rebounder. Meanwhile, Makayla Coy is No. 4 in Offensive Rebounds per Game (6.0), No. 15 in 3-Pt Fg Pct (50.0), and No. 20 in Total Rebounds per Game (10.5).
Last Time Out:
The Rams dropped a closely contested, 77-75 game to second-ranked Wayland Baptist in the Sooner Athletic Conference opener.
TXWES outshot its opponent from the field, 45% to 41%. The Flying Queens shot poorly from beyond the arc in the second half, going 4 of 16 and shot 30% in the category for the game. By comparison, the Lady Rams shot 41% from the three line, hitting 7 of 17 in the game.
Makayla Coy found a groove and led the all scorers with 21 points, going 7-of-15 from the field and 8 rebounds. Evie Whorley was the catalyst for the home team sixth career double-double behind 15 points and 13 rebounds. Alexus Brigham poured in 17 points and had five assists and five boards in the loss.
Scouting the Aggies:
OPSU played their first game of the season on Saturday, Jan. 9 in the SAC opener at Southwestern Assemblies of God.
A furious second half comeback by the Aggies came up a little short in a 79-74 road loss at SAGU. The Aggies stayed within one possession of SAGU in the first quarter but trailed by 25 at halftime after a nightmare second period, in which the Aggies were outscored 35-8.
OPSU kept its assault on the SAGU advantage going in the fourth stanza and, by the 6:14 mark, had managed to trim the hosts' margin to single digits, 69-60. With just 26 seconds remaining, freshman Alie Parkhurst got her own rebound and put the ball back in to get the Aggies to within two, 74-72. But OPSU could get no closer, as Panhandle was forced to foul and SAGU made its free throws down the stretch.
Seniors Cassia McCaskill and Naomi Rodriguez led the Aggies comeback bid. McCaskill had a game-leading 18 points, after making good on 7-of-14 field goal attempts. McCaskill was 2-for-5 from beyond the arc and 2-of-2 from the free throw stripe. She also pulled down five rebounds and had a pair of assists. Rodriguez drilled 6-of-11 shots from the floor on her way to a 17-point game.
Two other Aggies – newcomers Tateum Jones and Jo Quintero – both finished in double digits, booking 11 points apiece. Jones was 5-of-10 shooting and also was the game's co-leader with seven rebounds.
The History:
The Rams are 4-2 against the Aggies after starting competition during the 17-18 season. TXWES fell in their first two contests but has won the past four games.
In their most recent matchup last season, the Rams won 81-54 on the road in a contest where Makayla Coy led the team with 19 points and 16 rebounds as a freshman. Evie Whorley was a bucket behind her with 17 points and 8 boards.
Looking Forward:
The Rams will hit the road for two contests at John Brown and USAO. TXWES is 6-8 historically against John Brown and 2-5 in Siloam Springs, Ark. Against USAO the Rams are even 8-8 in the series but 3-5 in Chickasha, Okla.
