Brownwood, Texas – The Texas Wesleyan Men's and Women's Tennis teams dominated NCAA DIII Howard Payne, 9-0 and 9-0 to close the Fall season.
"I thought the women played very well. We've been working hard on building points and proper double strategy," said head coach
Angel Martinez. "This all came together in Kansas at the ITA and today. It's a great sign of development. We're looking forward to taking
Thamara Pinto and
Aurora Novati to the ITA national tournament this week."
New Lady Ram
Nicole Straznicky defeat Lillian Jonesane (HPU) 6-0 and 6-2 to set the pace for the rest of the team.
After not playing the ITA,
Kara Antonio and
Cecilia Salazar did not waste any time, winning in singles and doubles with ease.
Returners
Aurora Novati and
Thamara Pinto also made this weekend look easy in Singles and Doubles in preparation for what is coming next week at the 2021 ITA National Championship tournament.
On the Men's side, senior
Andres Gonzalez and junior
Lucas Diaz Freire, after having a great doubles tournament at the ITA regional, teamed up in a close match winning 8-6 over Knight and Gates. Giving the rams the decisive final point in doubles.
New additions
Cristian Perez and
Antoine Testaud posted singles wins for the Rams. Returner
Mathieu Vinet, who took a 6-0 / 6-0 singles win over Michael Woodard, also teamed up with
Pablo Olmedo to take an 8-1 doubles win over Hunter & Green.
"I'm very proud of both the Men's and Women's teams after this match. As teams we knew what we were up against and everyone handled the matches with humility and class," commented student assistant coach
Eric Gurtner. "In preparation as coaches, we asked the players to simply take care of business and they did just that. It was a great way to finish off our Fall 2021 campaign. As we continue into our off-season, it's time to get to work even harder and prepare for the spring season."
The Rams, both men's and women's, will continue to improve during the winter break on their own and keep their sights set on competing in the NAIA National tournament in Spring 2022.
