COLUMBIA, Ky. – The Texas Wesleyan University men's wrestling team went 2-3 at the NAIA Challenge Duals at the Holloway Health and Wellness Center on Saturday.
Brahn Howard, a sophomore business major from Houston, led the Rams going 4-0 on the day with three falls and a tech fall win competing in the 184-lb weight class.
Howard (184) scored the only points for the Rams in the dual with #8 Cumberlands. He earned a fall (1:37) over Colton Danielson. The Patriots took the dual, 42-6.
Against Midway, the Rams started on an 8-0 run after
Daniel Govea (125) earned a 10-9 decision and
Jordan Martinez (133) notched a 16-1 tech fall win (2:50). From there thought, the Rams dropped six of the eight remaining matches. Howard (184) collected a fall (1:37) and
Deandre Rucker (197) tacked on a 13-5 major decision win, but the team fell 28-18.
Against #17 Thomas More, the Rams took forfeits in the 141, 157, and 174 weight classes. Despite the giving up 18 points, TXWES made them up, finishing with 18 points to the Saints' 34.
Brady Earhart earned three points for an 8-1 decision win, but it was Emmitt Bivens in the heavyweight match that led the Rams in scoring. Bivens earned six points with a fall (0:42) over Chase Emmert. Howard moved to 3-0 on the day with a 19-0 tech fall (3:00) win. Martinez collected a second win in a 16-2 major decision win.
The Rams dominated in the dual with West Virgina Tech, with Martinez (133),
Zeno Marcheselli (184) and Bivens (285) all winning their respective matches by way of fall. The Rams won the dual 45-12.
The team ended the day with a 30-23 win over Truett-McConnell. The Bears forfeited two matches, but it was Howard again, along with Earhart who led the team with six points each.
Rusty Bowman (157) and Rucker (197) each posted narrowly decision wins over their opponents to close out the Bears in the win.
Next up for the Rams, the Reno Tournament of Champions, which runs Dec. 17 – 19 in Reno, Nev.
