EDMOND, Okla. – The Texas Wesleyan University men's and women's tennis team double-dipped Southwestern College at Oak Tree Country Club on Sunday. The Rams won 5-2 while the Lady Rams won 4-3. Both the Rams and Lady Rams improved to 3-0 on the season and upset the Moundbuilders.
The Southwestern College men's and women's teams are currently receiving votes in the current NAIA Top 25 polls. The SC women's team was picked to win the Kansas Collegiate Conference this season, while the men were picked second.
On the men's side, the Rams fought through a clean sweep of doubles matches, with No. 1 double Mathieu Vinet and Pablo Olmedo finishing off double play with a strong 6-2 win over Santiago Bracco and Federico Poi.
In singles play, the Rams took singles 2, 3, 5, and 6. Almost every match was closely contested, the closes being a Felipe Parra comeback win over Jonathan Da la O. Parra dropped the first set 6-2, before coming back to take the second set 6-2 and powering to a 10-4 win in the third set.
On the women's side, the Lady Rams dropped the double point, as the duo of
Aurora Novati and Kara Antonio took a 6-4 win in doubles 1's, but SC's Alexa Powers and Caroline Henry narrowly outlasted
Cecilia Salazar and
Mae Covacevich in singles 3's by a score of 6-7(5).
In singles play, the Lady Rams were led by Covacevich, who took the singles 6's match 6-0, 6-0. Antonio went 6-1, 6-1, and Thamara Pinto took the 2's match-up 6-2, 6-3. Novati gutted out a close fight Mariana Ochoa, 6-4, 2-6, 10-2. Ochoa was an at-large selection to compete at the ITA tennis national tournament in September.
The teams will host Hardin Simmons University at the Arlington Tennis Center on Sunday, March 7. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
