ARLINGTON, Texas – The Texas Wesleyan University men's tennis team (8-0) remain unbeaten after a 4-2 win over Dallas Baptist (10-7), while the women's tennis team (5-1) had its toughest test to date in a gear-up for the conference tournament, falling to the Patriots (13-4) 4-0 at the Arlington Tennis Center on Friday.
Texas Wesleyan tennis honored four seniors for their dedication and effort in building the men's and women's programs since its resurrection in 2017.
Mae Covacevich,
Linus Richter,
Jarod Sweetland, and
Eric Gurtner are all playing in their final year.
When asked what impact these players have had on their respective programs, head coach
Angel Martinez replied, "These four seniors were the foundation of the success that are having this season. Each one of them has contributed and has helped us build the program into the direction that is going today. They are special people and they will be missed next year."
On the men's side, the team dropped all three doubles matches, but won the four singles matches necessary to end the duel.
Arthur Voiseux and Juan Felipe Parra grabbed victory in singles #4 and 5 respectively, before DBU's Grant McKenzie won the singles #1 match-up.
The Rams would take singles #3 that saw
Pablo Olmedo outlast Gabe Garrido in three sets.
Thibault Gasser provided the clincher for the Rams by taking the singles #6 match-up 7-5, 7-6(6).
On the women's side, the Lady Rams faced a very solid Patriots team as TXWES looked to get some work in against top Texas talent. DBU's Taylor Leslie and Kate Daugherty are among the ITA's Top 50 singles players in NCAA DII.
Aurora Novati is also ranked in ITA's top 50 in the NAIA division, coming in at 48. In the Central Region Singles rankings however, Novati ranks third.
Also ranked in the Central Region is newcomer
Thamara Pinto, who ranks 17th.
In Central Region doubles rankings the duo of Novati and Kara Antonio rank 5th, while Pinto and
Caitlin Souvannavong rank 10th.
The team will play Austin College on April 17th in Sherman, Texas before competing at the Red River Athletic Conference tournament starting April 22nd.
